star power. name recognition.
most of the guys on here never saw most of their fights. i was still a kid in those days. the only reason i saw it was my dad is a big boxing fan and i would watch the fights and all their career tapes with him.
10 years from now when you do a oscar/tito/mosley/vargas thread......oscar will get the most votes watch.Last edited by Left Hook Tua; 12-18-2008, 01:37 AM.Comment

I don't really know in what sense we're talking about being 'better', but since it's going on just the Fab Four then I take it to mean in a head to head kind of thing which is the reason they were so good. Since they all fought each other it should be pretty obvious though.
As a Fab Four head to head ranking it should go Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and then Duran. Leonard was the only one to beat them all, whereas Duran lost to them all, but was also the only one to beat Leonard. Hagler of course destroyed Hearns and had a close, hard fight with Duran, while Hearns destroyed Duran and had a close, hard fight with Leonard but also beat him very convincingly in the rematch, despite the BS decision.
If we're going on individual All Time rankings though, then it swaps quite considerably as Duran certainly goes to the top, Leonard, Hagler and then Hearns brings up the end.
Quite simply, one of the greatest era's in boxing history and one that will never be repeated. I don't think that there will ever be another era in which four of the greatest fighters, of not only that time but of all time, are fighting in and around the same divisions and fighting each other! Stunning. It's just a pity that Duran was older and much smaller than the other guys when they all fought, but I suppose with everything else that he achieved and the fact he was much older and smaller it really just shows how great he was.
Anyway, we can only hope to see a similar thing in our lifetimes.
