I love the commentary in Byrd vs. Ibeabuchi

Jones Jr: Byrd is very smart hitting Ibeabuchi in the body to take some of the power away from him later in the fight.

Merchant: Those punches couldn't take the power away from a mouse.
    (Merchant and Lampley laugh)

Jones Jr: I don't know Larry, go in there and get hit and see if you still think that way.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Merchant: I've got to admit a certain prejudice here. There are times when I watch Byrd, if I was a referee I'd want to take a point away from him for non-performance. This is a lot of junk that he's giving us here.

Lampley: But Larry, it's called the manly art of self-defense.

Merchant: Well, I don't see anything manly about this.

I've watched that fight more than I've watched almost any other. If only we had a couple of Ibeabuchis now, or even just one. I can't understand how Merchant would feel that way, because Byrd was fighting guys who were much bigger than him and he was willing to take bombs. Ike, Tua and the Klitschkos etc, from a man who probably could have been a super middleweight. Byrd had balls whether he was liked or not.

I think ppl today are finding out about him, and saying "damn"! like I did with Shavers. no Ike wasnt a murderer when he hit you but he was a no-back-down, fighter. period. I would bet my soul that Ike hasn't been prison ****d. he is hard core

Merchant is a fool, Roy Jones' commentary is nearly always right. Merchant has got it wrong many times and is extremely biased. Replace him with Kellerman.

Merchant comes from the journalistic point of view, the third perspective whose priority is that of the viewer. He is the consumer watchdog, so to speak.

His commentary might not take the fighter's interests into account, but he is always looking out for the fan, because he himself is an admirer of the sport.

                  Plus he's hilarious and witty.
