I think it's actually an OK idea. Oddly enough, I was gonna post a thread asking how to measure the force of a punch. Would this app work on an iPod Touch? My girlfriend has one, maybe I can try it out once my arm injury is recovered.

iPod touch is very similar to the iPhone, I think, only without a phone (obviously).

I don't really know what a gyro-sensor is. She says it senses motion but it may not be 100% accurate. Whatever, it's a free app and it might be fun for 5 minutes.
