Rahman in the Wlad fight.
People who call fighters "Bums"

I thought a journeyman was someone who's climbing through the ranks. Ya know, like a journey?
Yes, i agree completely. People who really don't know what it's like to be in the ring and what pros have to deal with should not be calling boxers scrubs, or bums.
However, there are boxers out there who are bums. But i just think that the term "bum" shouldn't be thrown around loosley just because a fighter doesn't satisfy the crowd.
I'd consider Zab Judah a bum because he has no heart, but a whole lot of skill.Comment

I don't think Rahman was a bum in that fight. he took the fight on very short notice and in the corner when they asked him if he wanted to continue he said "Yeah all the way to the end" I almost liked him when he said that....lol...a bum is someone who doesnt try someone who has talent but quits when he is faced with a tough challange...someone who has potential but rather take easy fights and make money than achieve greatness. Oh I describe most fighters fighting today.....just kidding....bum is a harsh teerm and should be used only when applies. Judah is a bum .....LeftyComment

Nah. The term is a very old one actually, it originally referred to a craftsman who had completed an apprenticeship but was not yet (and might never become) a master.
I think we need to keep this in context. Whatever the dictionary definition the term generally has a specific usage here which is pretty much what the original poster suggested for 'journeyman'. Except in a few cases, I don't think any disrespect is implied, just an honest assessment of their place in the boxing scheme of things.Yes, i agree completely.
