The fact that Wlad managed to get knocked out three times in this ****ty division tells me he wouldn't survive in most other eras let alone win a title. Vitali would do fine in any division but wouldn't be the best in the truly great eras.
Now these days theres not many good fighters in the heavyweight division. Most of the fights are slow and boring. I think Wladimir Klitscho is overated and the reason why he keeps wining is coz theres no one really that good. He made corrie sanders and lamon brewster famous and who hasn't beaten rachman. He wouldn't beat true heavyweight champions like Lenox Lewis or Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in their prime. I can't stand to see this guy fight... he leaves his guard down and his opponents don't fight back.
Another thread ranting about Mike Tyson. Get off his **** you pathetic fanbois, he is long gone.
The HW division has some pretty good fighters right now, and the brothers K would have made a splash in any era. What it doesn't have is any decent American fighters, which is what sad threads like this are really all about.
The heavyweight division overall isnt as bad as well all say it is (myself included).
I sat down and thought about the heavyweight division after the wlad v. rahman fight and i realized a few things...
A) Guys like Frazier, Ali, Tyson, Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield, Marciano, etc. (i really could go on forever) once made the heavyweight division THEE division in boxing (much like lightweight and welterweight is today).
However I think too many people (myself including once again) EXPECT today's heavyweights to measure up to those of the past...and we have to remember that we're talking too many different eras.
B) The styles used for heavyweight fighters (as well as their body types) have changed over the years...the heavyweight division has been filled with extremely tall and stocky fighters (6'3+ and 250+) in the haydays of ali this wasnt very common. I think the conditioning is also a factor because there are heavyweights today that look like they dont even belong in the sport. The "fat" guys like arreola (how comes in with a gut every now and then) or guys like (i forget how to spell his name but he's fighting holyfield)...thats a big dude...7ft. 320lbs...he belongs in the NBA or on an NFL team...
you wont see 7ft 320lb men dancing on their toes like ali or being relentlessly agressive like a mike tyson...its a new era euro thing really.
C) you can blame it on there being a lack of talent (which overall there is) BUT i also think its combined with wlad being THAT much better than the rest of the competition.
Think back to the wlad/sultan fight...that was supposed to be the big heavyweight fight of the year and it was a jab a thon...sultan couldnt pull the trigger (except for the jab) and wlad was having such an easy time with him the jab was all he needed to win that fight and he won virtually every round.
I say its a combination (overall) of lack of talent, the physique of the fighters, the styles, and no one really giving wlad a run for his money.
guys like david haye bring some promise to the heavyweights as he is a smaller heavyweight who will bring the speed and aggression that has been lacking.
Im trying to have an optimistic view believing that sometime soon a new era of heavyweights will shine through.
