Does the fighter make the trainer, or the trainer make the fighter?

I use Enzo Cal as an example, not really well known but he made Joe into the best smw ever. But could Joe have been as great without Enzo. Did Manny Steward make his fighters better or was he in the right place, right time with great fighters to start with?

Does the trainer make the fighter, or the fighter make the trainer?

    It's both.

No trainer in the world can make chicken salad from chicken ****. But I do believe trainer's can make the world of difference. Anyone that doesn't think so has never had a good coach.

It can work both ways, but usually it is the fighter that makes a particular trainer look significantly better than they are, as they are the ones that are actually in the ring doing the fighting.

It's a bit of both. Some trainers have career long affiliations to fighters while others start trainin em when they're already established veterans. Some fighters will be great regardless of who's in their corner cuz they just got that much talent.

some fighters are born great it doesnt matter who trains them
look at kostya tszyu. johnny lewis didnt teach him much but
he was the right trainer for him

then you have emmanuel steward. what were wlad and lennox like
before him ? chinny .... off balanced
          emmanuel is a great trainer

its a matter of which trainers and fighters match up ...

Well a good example is McGirt. He trained Gatti and Tarver during their resurgence, but both were good boxers to begin with and McGirt if anything just encouraged them to go back to basics.

I believe a really good trainer can take a guy with raw fighting talent and mold him into a championship caliber boxer like Cus did with Mike.

A good trainer also serves as the guide with an additional pair of eyes when his fighter is in the ring.

Boxers who are guided by their dads from an early age have that special bond from the very beginning as an advantage like Joe, Mayweather, and Mosley had.

Ultimately, if the fighter has a successful career, his trainer will inevitably get a lot of the credit.
