After watching Pacquiao this past weekend fight a welterweight fight weighing in at 142 before the fight, why do fighters use catchweights so much? Why put on weight that is uncomfortable to them as boxers? I'll use Kelly Pavlik as an example. Pavlik was clearly not comfortable with his weight in the Hopkins fight, 170. He weighed 170 before the fight and probably 175 the night of the fight. Why not just come in weighing around 163 or 165? Does that weight difference between the two really make that big of a power difference? I mean, in my mind, I think if Pavlik had weighed in at around 163 at the weigh in and 170 fight night, he would have faired much better. Am I right, or is the Pacquiao fight an exception?
