He was a very good fighter at his peak. He's one of those guys who would have made the hall of fame with another signature win or two. His best moments came against Howard Davis, Genaro Leon, Simon Brown and Whitaker (in a loss) in their first fight. I feel like Buddy was a better Zab Judah with less athleticism (raw talent possibly), but with more discipline and technique.

He had an awesome right hand too.

I really enjoyd his first fight with Pernell Whitaker. A really top class technical fight.

Al Certo (and many other sources) said McGirt had a lot of left shoulder trouble throughout his Welterweight career. Torn tendon or tendinitis or something like that. Made him hesitant to throw the left hook. That got him into trouble against the better opponents he faced because he was primarily a left jab/right hand fighter...easy to predict.

One of my favorite fights featuring two serious technicians. Toney/McCallum I is another excellent, highly technical chess match.

Yep, that is my favourite James Toney fight. I just love those fights where two class guys go at it for the full 12 but are classy enough to do it in style. It is as good as boxing gets.

Yeah, world class fighters letting their hands go WITHOUT HOLDING every two seconds. It's a Christmas miracle if when you see two guys fighting toe to toe without clinching nowadays. I love to see two fighters keep their hands moving on the inside, using defense to get out of tough situations as opposed to having the ref break em up.

McGirt was a very good fighter in his prime, good technical skills, fast and good power, he did come up short in most of his big fights though.
