How would Ali be regarded if he fought in the 1940's?

Would he be regarded as univirtuous in his style and his attitude? Because there wasn't really anybody like Ali until Ali and people didnt like him initially.

Or maybe to put it this way. Was there anybody like Ali before Ali? That was comparable to him at all?

Jack Johnson was by accounts similar to Ali, flaunting his wealth and boasting in public, he was not well liked.

Ali wasn't even liked during his own time, what makes you think the 40's would be any better or worse?

I dont think he would be. I just have this strange picture in my mind of the 1940's fighters and their style and how radically different Ali's is to that and how he would fit in that.

You know how their feet are planted ready to throw combinations with all their body strength and Ali being the total opposite never setting his feet, always moving. I guess that was just the natural evolution, if Ali didn't have that style somebody else would I guess.

Is it evolution or devolution I dont know.

I'm wondering if that style would be acceptable as means of winning back then if you were makign like Joe Louis look bad with it.

Maybe he enjoyed it but I think it was mainly to sell a fight and to sell himself, he wanted to stand out and he did, he was a different person on and off camera anyways, he was said to be a very nice, quiet guy off camera.

And I doubt he would have been liked in the 40s, there was a reason why Joe Louis had a code of conduct.

So could anybody that fought the old time style beat Ali? Well I guess Frazier sort of fought the old time style. sort of, well I guess he pretty much did.

Was it entirely Cud D'Amato that taught him to fight like that or did he come up with sort of on his own?
