Oscar de la Hoya downs Pacquiao in a wild affair!
by Sebastian Montesi
It was not easy, nor was it pretty, but "The Golden Boy" eventually did his job as the bigger man, putting Pacquiao down and out for the count with one sizzling left hook in the 8th round. Not all of Oscar's night was that easy though. The two fighters went life or death for 7 rounds. "He hit me a lot harder than I expected" claimed de la Hoya, "I didn't think his power would carry this high to be totally honest, Larry", he told HBO after the fight. After Pacquiao got up, and left the ring under his own power, refusing to leave on a stretcher, he stated "I want a re-match, I showed that I can beat de la Hoya!"
A summation of the fight:
Round 1:
As both fighters met in the centre of the ring, it was the Pacman who struck first, firing a jab to Oscar's body and instantly snapping back his head with a big left hand. Oscar retaliated instantly, not one to be shown up by a smaller man, and backed Pacquiao into the ropes several times. A very close round. 10-9 Pacquiao
Round 2:
Oscar started more aggressive, but it was Pacquiao who moved away well. About 30 seconds into the round, Manny made Oscar nearly double over from a vicious bodyshot. Oscar kept throwing, but to no effect.
10-9 Pacquiao
Round 3:
Pacquiao came out incredibly confident and started swinging for the fences, thinking Oscar was still hurt. As he rushed in, he absorbed a massive right hand followed by a left hook from Oscar and went down hard. Oscar, still firing, hit Manny square in the temple while he was on the canvas. Referee Tony Weeks, gave Manny a count (Pacquiao was up at 7) and took a point away from Oscar.
9-8 de la Hoya
Round 4: After a mostly uneventful round, de la Hoya seemed to hurt Pacquiao with a series of bodyshots followed by combination to the head. The bell rang, and Oscar was unable to capitilize.
10-9 de la Hoya
Round 5: In the most exciting round of the fight, both fighters went toe-to-toe from the beginning, refusing to relent. It was Pacquiao who was hurt first and went tumbling into the ropes in what could have easily been ruled a knockdown. After absorbing a few more punishing shots, he rallied, landing a big overhand left over top of Oscar's right. de la Hoya staggered across the ring, clearly hurt by the blow. By the end of the round both men were throwing and landing often. Pacquiao was cut below both eyes badly, and Oscar's right eye was exetremely swollen. Round of the year, anyone?
10-9 de la Hoya
Round 6: The action from round 5 continued as Pacquiao worked his way in, and Oscar attempted to keep him at range. Pacquiao seemed to stun Oscar with a few body shots, but unexplainably, hit Oscar behind the head several times as he doubled over. The foul was so blatent that Referee Tony Weeks took a point from Pacquiao.
9-9 even (Pacquiao's round)
Round 7: Manny was able to keep Oscar away and land constant hard left hands but up and down stairs.
10-9 Pacquiao
Round 8: After a few furious exchanges, Oscar caught Manny coming in and floored him for several minutes with an absolutely brutal left hook. Pacquiao was out cold in this late candidate for KO of the year.
