CompuBox Analysis: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao

By CompuBox - All of this began within the fertile imagination of HBO analyst Larry Merchant. After a lengthy and arduous negotiation period, the “The Dream Match” will become a reality December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as Oscar de la Hoya will fight Manny Pacquiao – his second pound-for-pound king in his last three bouts – in a scheduled 12 round welterweight bout.

When the bout was first brought up, most boxing analysts dismissed it as farce because of the vast differences in size. De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KO) owns a four-inch height and six-inch reach advantage over Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KO) but two factors have elevated this bout in terms of esteem. First, the 29-year-old Pacquiao is more than five years younger than the 35-year-old De La Hoya, whose “Golden Boy” moniker is no longer chronologically accurate. And second, Pacquiao’s electrifying performance in dethroning WBC lightweight champion David Diaz – his first outing at 135 – created a convincing enough imprint to make the match a saleable commodity. Thus, De La Hoya is a slightly less than a 2-to-1 favorite to win. [details]

This event should not be about Unanimous Decision(UD)/SD/KO/KO'd. It should be viewed as a lead for heavier boxers to go down in weight and for lighter boxers to come up and face the challenge. Boxing is Business and should be promoted. No matter how good a boxer is in offense or defense, or even with a perfect 100-0(!) record, if the pocket is empty then he is not a good boxer. Sell your best skills and wear the gloves!

stamina won't enter the picture here as DLH should not need 12 rounds to get manny out of there. if manny lasts but still loses, he's a winner in my book.

            The Match-up

I will like to hope Pac-Man wins , since I feel he can do more for boxing than Oscar De La Hoya can who has done his part to bring boxing to the mainstream. I feel however, Pac-Man can give hardcore and casual fans more **** for the buck in the immediate future fighting every one from 135 to 140 preferably and maybe some of the shorter fighters at 147 such as a Cotto, Mosley, and Berto to name a few. As oppose to De La Hoya who has had keyword "had" his share of marquee fights in the past such as Quartey and Mosley , but let's face it if De La Hoya should face Hatton over any of the big names in 147 then let us not be duped into paying for PPV's that are nothing more than intriguing circus matches that sell more names than fight.

That being said I predict De La Hoya will defeat Pac-Man in the ring by Unaminous Decision, but Pac-Man is relentless and has an aura of strength like a Shaolin Monk and De La Hoya will know he has been in a fight before it is all said and done.

Why don't you put the stats up for the marquez vs pacquiao 2 up there? That will tell you landed more punches and was more acurate.

How about letting the two of them punch you and tell us who's the harder puncher

pretty interesting stats on the DLH/PBF fight... DLH didn't decrease his jab output... it's just that they weren't landing.
