we need some more U.S. fighters to win gold friggin medals at the olympics. or Tyson needs to make a comeback and fight some turds. I think having an american, dominant HW champ can sell some ppvs and then by throwing the P-wills of the world on the undercards they can be built up into stars as well. even though Williams is already a star imo

boxing needs this kind of fights,i just hope this will not turn out to be just purely media blitz but lacks the action that boxing fans are looking for.with the pacman atop the ring im sure its an action packed fight and we can only ask for hatton next.

Great piece Jake. It really underlines the naivety of the mainstream media when it comes to boxing. I can recall many instances where the only investigative journalism done by USA Today was to grab tidbits and quotes from press releases and pass it off as an in-depth pre-fight analysis.

It's the same old cliche'/theme, is this the fight to save boxing, can the sport be saved, what homeless shelter will take Don King in? The way that the mainstream media treats the sport is an insult to it's fans and it's media, who actually follow the sport.

I think that fights like this are good for the sport. Anything that gets people talking is good. If it turns out to be a good fight it could be very for the sport. I agree with those who say ppv hurts. I would love to see the fight on HBO, don't even get me started about ABC. I'm one of those old enough to remember when boxing was a regular item on the Wide World of Sports. But with todays economy, a family to provide for and Christmas right around the corner, I'll have to wait for the HBO airing...

yea. i thought it was just me, but this seems to be the most UNINTERESTING "mega fight" in a long time.........

i'll go to a bar or something and watch it maybe, but im looking forward to january in a big way. after a great year of boxing, the last 2 months have been a bit of a letdown.

you want boxing watched? give us fights people care about. i was way more interested in the malinaggi/hatton fight (although it turned out to be ****ty), hell i was even more interested in the PW-Phillips fight.......but cong**** to oscar and manny on their big paydays, that's what it's about these days.....

                    i agree and disagree......

its not necessarily the ppv's that hurt boxing, but its the ppv's!

u can go to a bar, buy a few beers, watch a ppv for free, so its not the price, its more so what the actual fight is itself.....

certain fights just DONT belong on PPV.....for instance, in february, the cotto and pavlik fight will be on PPV. NO, not against each other, but basically a double-header against proven nobodies, that serve as "comeback opponents" cuz pavlik and cotto both lost their last fights......

so why does that NEED to be on PPV, but a much better fight (margarito-mosley) easily put on regular HBO?

i agree regular networks like FOX, NBC, ABC should throw their hats into the mix for big fights too, it helps.....but what it comes down to is making fights people WANT to see, cuz everybody can cry about fights being to expensive to watch, but the regular networks will be paying a pretty penny for these fights, but they wanna make sure its worth it for them financially too.

                    make better fights.

Even though I've watched alot of fights on Sop/ Justin...I wouldn't mind buying if the card was stacked with good fighters.

Also throwing **** right after the fight would be good. Is that too much to ask?
Unfortunately everybigname they put on their cuts into everyone's pocket in a bigway. I believe promoters realize they can make the most money now by charging a large amount and caplitalizing exclusively on the hardcore fans that will buy ppvs with mediocre undercards. I don't think it would cost much to tack a cinemax type **** on the end of a feature.. Jim Lampley giving the hand off segway to the **** would be wierd.
