Legendary heavyweight champion Gene Tunney was inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame this past Friday. Known as “The Fighting Marine,” Tunney was one of the most skilled of all heavyweight champions due to his ring generalship and superior technique. Tunney rose from middleweight to heavyweight and fought a generation of quality opponents during his 13-year career. Undefeated as a heavyweight, with only one pro loss (at light heavyweight against the “Human Windmill” Harry Greb), Tunney retired (permanently) the day after he made the second defense of his title with a record of 80-1-3 with 48 knockouts. Tunney passed away at age 81 on November 7, 1978. He was honored as one of the inaugural inductees into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
