De La Hoya-Pacquiao: Are You Buying the Hard Sell?

By Cliff Rold - It’s almost here and the head scratching continues about exactly what is coming.

In little more than a week, 29-year old WBC Lightweight titlist Manny Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KO) will step up 12 pounds from his latest home on the scale to face 35-year old former lineal Jr. Welterweight, Welterweight and Jr. Middleweight champion Oscar De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KO) at Welterweight. They’re two of the biggest and most storied names in the modern fight game but skepticism about the matchmaking remains. Something about this fight still just doesn’t feel right, feels cynical. this fight just isn't a "Manly" Challenge,.. and Oscar keeps talking about the fight as if he just challenged Margarito himself,.. I don't see how DLH can take himself seriously,.. this is almost as absurd as when Woody Allen married his adopted step daughter,.. but yeah,.. I guess I'll buy the freak show.

I think this writer is being unfair, even too harsh on both fighters particularly on Pacquiao by belittling his rise from a junior flyweight up to lightweight while not having an in depth understanding of the circumstances while he was climbing each rung. I can’t believe he’s even downgrading Pac’s latest challenge in moving up 2 more divisions way past his comfort zone to take on one of the most celebrated fighters of our era who's been in terrific fights himself against other great and much bigger fighters than Pac.

There's just too much nostalgia and reverence attached to the legendary boxers of the past that it makes it harder for a boxer today to come up with anything that will hold a candle to them when comparing legacy. The olden day fighters are held in such lofty heights that to some people it would even sound like an insult to bring up their names when discussing today’s stars.

Oscar is a b!tch for not fighting Margarito, but im still going to order this fight. who doesnt like pacmans fighting style. even if oscar wins, if pacman puts up a good fight and makes it intresting then thats a loss for Oscar.

lol Lets be serious, it's not like Paq will face a dangerous fighter at full strength. And if Oscar wins this fight and retires, him and his career will be cut up to say the least.

maybe we should be taking note of packan having the guts to move up 2 weight classes and get it on with a former middleweight instead of this writer putting him down I hope he wins though cause this fight shouldn't be going ahead

No one put Pac down, though the paycheck has as much to do with it as guts. This is just an issue of recognizing the variables that make this fight competitive.

yes you did. back then, pac was the one moving up, went up 126 to face mab and jmm, went up to 130 to face the bigger morales and 135 for diaz. if your corrales castillo and pbf were the top dogs at 130 when he moved up, im sure pac would face them but it was morales who was there so stop your whining. these are all 'would have' fights we'd all like to see so you can't say pac had an easier time w/ EM/MAB/JMM than them.
