Floyd Mayweather, churches team up to giveaway 500 turkeys

GRAND RAPIDS -- Times are tough, but 500 Southeast Side residents can cross the Thanksgiving turkey off their list of worries.

The Floyd Mayweather Foundation and several local churches teamed up to give turkeys to those in need.

Sisters Bonnie and Henrittie Shaver arrived at Duthler Family Foods, 1226 Madison Ave. SE, about 9 a.m. to get in line for the Monday afternoon giveaway.

Bonnie, 50, was beaming as she walked out of the store with her turkey.

"I can't wait to put it on the table," said Bonnie, who babysits for a living. "I'm making dressing from scratch. I'm going to have a nice Thanksgiving.

"It means a lot for (Mayweather) to do this. It's great to give to people that don't have it."

Mayweather's foundation matched donations from a dozen churches in the area to provide the turkeys. It was the fourth-annual such giveaway in which Mayweather, the Grand Rapids-native boxing champ, has participated.

Mayweather is filming a reality TV show in Las Vegas and couldn't make the giveaway, but foundation representatives said he was there in spirit.

"Even though he might not have a physical presence, his heart is still here," said foundation executive assistant Brandy McCallum.

A free turkey brightened the spirits of Margaret Gates, 58, who went to the store with her two-year-old grandson, Kertril.

"I think it's great. It's such a nice thing," said Gates, who joked that she'd make the turkey last until Christmas.

    Im not going to hate.

I think its a great thing someone of mayweather's status can help out the needy.

Shows he has some good heart under all the trash talking and ****yness.

i would have loved it more if he were in person like vasquez, gomez, and the whole group out there in L.A.

but his thought it definately what counts.

I wonder who else is helping out this thanksgiving to the poor?

He does this every year.. he gives away winter clothing sometimes too.. Yes Floyd does not forget where he comes from... I salute him for that..

It doesn't change that he is an insecure ego maniac.. It just means he is a charitable insecure ego maniac..

Good for Floyd. He really is a good human being even though he's arrogant as a fighter. Pacman is the truth when it comes to this stuff though, dude just straight up gives people money.

If you read boxing sites, it's well known what Floyd does outside of the ring as far as donations and helping out.

The hate will come from his boxing career and his flashy life-style.

But really, what makes the man is his intentions and actions of how he treats people.

Why would anyone hate on this? Its good that Floyd is giving back to the less fortunate. Nice to hear him talk about something other than money, cars, money, cars, money, cars, etc...
