It's all to do with slave ownership, sadly. They took the surname of their owner. What with a lot of Welsh folk settling in the southern states of the US (3 or 4 of them signed the Declaration of Independence such as Thomas Jefferson) and some becoming slave traders and also the old British slave base being just on the Welsh border (Bristol) it's rather inevitable.
As for Calzaghe, if he's English due to the fact he spent three months in Hammersmith then I must be Zambian. And I tad fairer than your average resident of Lusaka.
