There's different theories on it. One is that a designer of World of Warcraft made a typo where in a certain scene 'pwned' would appear on the screen instead of 'owned'.

I used to hear the term "You got Pawned" since I was a kid.

Pawn is the piece on a Chess board and to get "pawned" it meant that someone made you look like a peasant/loser/slave/his *****.

It means you got taken advantage of and you should go cry in the corner.
