He looked fat against Hopkins, like a real blown up Super Middleweight, against Jones he looked like he always does just at 175. Calzaghe really underestimated Hopkins, you can tell by all the press conferences, "You will lose, you can't beat me man" was all he really said. He was up for the Jones fight and you saw the difference there, he admitted he trained an extra 2 weeks for the Jones fight compared to the Hopkins one.

Calzaghe was clearly not up for Hopkins

yeah, i think joe doesn't love the sport anymore and has no motivation. AGainst Kessler the fear of losing was there, but he underestimated Hopkins and had no real game plan. He still won without a doubt in my book. He is a master of adjusting.
I don't think Joe should fight again, but i guess he could earn 10M $ easily fighting in Cardiff in front of a 70K+ crowd. He is not hungry anymore, but a Dawson win would be a big legacy-fight.

I really doubt he underestimated Hopkins, and if he did, it would have been pretty ******. His lack of definition can be attributed to him moving up for the first time, his body may not have been used to 175 yet, he looked more filled out against Jones.

I've been watching Joe most of his career (saw him live against Bika and Woodhall, and Lacy), and i have to say watching him against B-Hop he clearly didn't have the hunger that he showed against Eubank, Brewer, Lacy and Kessler for eg).
He wasn't even at his best against Jones. He fought that contest as if it was a sentimental farewell fight. But it was an improvement on the Hopkins bout.

If Joe over-looked Hopkins he is an idiot.
Nobody has looked great against Hopkins, so why should Joe think he can come in less than stellar?
Plus, and this is the kicker, why would Joe want to risk losing his "O," especially on American soil against a Man who said he would "Never lose to a White Man" ?
I think Joe might not have been used to the little bit of extra weight...but that is about it.

I think it is possible that his hunger has gone down; that happens and can happen at any age...especially if you feel you reached your goal and proved your point.
However, I think there should have been enough given the circumstance to motivate Joe, but maybe not; I don't know.

surely he felt more pressure against Jones. I think he considered Hopkins old and well past it. In the fight he was there for a bit of a surprise...hopkins was still very competitive. Thats why against jones he took it more seriously...and it showed in the preparation.

no doubt i said the same thing in a post in another thread.
imo thats why joe looked a bit sluggish vs hopkins, even in the weigh in he looked as though he had a few extra pounds of fat just to make the weight.
vs RJJ though you're right he looked spot on, and looked as though he had settled at the weight.

He's said several times he wasn't too up for the Hopkins fight, had under rated him, and not trained as hard. It was a little silly and he had a fright in the ring, but he came through and that speaks numbers, imagine if he Joe we saw vs Roy showed up for Nard. He looked like the genuine #1 LHW in that fight, definitely filled up, trained better and better performance.

No one is up for Hopkins. Pavlik looked bad against him so did , Taylor(even though he won), Tito, Oscar, Winky, and Tarver. I think it might be a trend...
