Funny/Sad Fact: Jermain Taylor holds Compubox MW jab record

    8/8/03 vs. Freddie Cuevas
677 jabs thrown by Taylor over 12 rounds

    AFAIK this record still stands.

Not to mention, he threw 1017 total punches in that fight (avg of 85).

My question... WTF happened to this version of Taylor?

His punch output was less than half that against Lacy (442). Obviously this didn't cost him anything in a fight where he was dominant throughout.

However, he had similar numbers for Lacy as he did in the 2nd Pavlik fight (456), a fight many people thought was Pavlik won based on his superior workrate.

His only decent punch totals since fighting for Hopkins' belts came against Ouma (597) and Wright (703).

Whatever they were doing when he was a challenger... they need to get back to it. Whether it's making him spar for 15 rounds against 3 fresh guys or running 10 miles a day or whatever, his stamina needs HELP. Especially considering he seems to have lost his ability to win inside 12.

I would say that his competition is a lot better and can deal with the jabs better, but I mean he fought Jeff Lacy and didn't throw nearly as much....I agree with you.

The level of competition does play into it... Cuevas was a sitting target and Taylor was able to tee off at will... but even then, today I don't know that he could throw 800+ punches a fight if his payday depended on it.

the Jermain Taylor that was being trained by Pat Burns>the one that trained under Manny Steward.

Steward is a very good trainer, but he doesnt work for everyone. Taylor and Burns worked out very well, they should have never split. under Burns, Taylor was a learning fighter who constantly stuck out his very good jab, and relied more on boxing basics combined with his natural speed/talents.

Manny's style of 'picking your shots' and clinching on the inside just didnt work for someone like Taylor...that happens sometimes. sorry to say it, but Taylor mixing with Manny set him back.
