Title Shot Once Again Within Reach For Jhonny Gonzalez

By Jake Donovan - It was a year ago when the comeback trail began (53 weeks, to be exact). There stood Jhonny Gonzalez, entering the ring without a title around his waist for the first time in two years.

The November ’07 bout against Jose Angel Beranza was his first since the crushing knockout he suffered three months prior against Gerry Penalosa, and ten rounds later looked like an old 26 more so than just 26 years old.

Fast forward a year and a week later. Four fights lasting a total of then rounds, and suddenly Gonzalez (39-6, 33KO) has rediscovered his swagger. Three straight Telefutura-televised knockouts helped propel Gonzalez back toward the top of three major alphabet organizations.

As cliché as it sounds to chant “wait ‘till next year,” there’s now little reason to believe that 2009 won’t bring about bigger and better things for the Mexican boxer-puncher.

Of course, that equation dramatically changes should super bantamweight gatekeeper Reynaldo Lopez manages to catch another contender napping. The Colombian ****er stands opposite Gonzalez when they meet tonight at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, California (Friday, 8PM ET/PT, Telefutura).

Normally the punch that hurts the most is the one you don’t see coming. Only a complete lack of research would disallow Gonzalez from knowing what Lopez brings to the table at this point. [details]

Gonzalez is a good fighter, he'd be a tough test for Lopez.

I don't think i've seen Lopez fight, but if Johnny is in shape, focused and fights like he's been fighting he'll win either by ko or decision. People sleeping on Johnny the guy is still a good fighter with power though he doesn't look like he carries power. I can't belive Gonzalez is only 26 his fight with Vasquez was a classic and at the time i didn't like the fact that Suarez stopped the fight against Vasquez but i think Suarez saved Johnny from further unneccsary punishment. And he knew Johnny was strongmined to over come the lose and true to point Johnnys beein in a winning fight streek - r.i.p Oscar Suarez.

It ain't outta the question for Gonzo to beat Lopez imo. That'd be a good fight.

Jhonny Gonzalez is a really good fighter... pretty underrated too.

The clinic he was putting on against Penalosa until that body shot was unreal.

He would be one of the opponents that would make me more nervous for my boy Lopez to fight.

J.G. has been a favorite of mine for some time.

I knew it was only a matter of time till he worked his way back after a couple set backs.

wow... happy to see all the love gonzalez is getting from the NSB community... guess there really is some true boxing fans on here afterall...

but nonetheless, penalosa over J.G was a fluke. J.G was physically drained and thus couldnt take dem bodyshots... Not a fluke win, but i gurantee J.G can beat gerry penalosa come on now...

hell yes,Jhonny is never a dissapointment, the penalosa loss put his weight as a major factor, dude came in at 116,i think he overtrained which led to a weaker fighter,I been a huge fan since the Vazquez fight and i'm really hoping he gets a good win tonight,i'd really like a rematch with penalosa at 122,i pick him to beat the molitor/caballero winner,i'm still unsure about lopez thought,i need to see his power against a better 122 pounder to see
