This should be understood when fans wonder why a fighter doesnt face a fighter or why they insist on certain monetary values.
I think Roy Jones always knew he didnt have the best of chins, I think thats what he fought at a distance most of his career, even though with his speed he didnt need to fight in close and engage.
I think its why Hatton always calls out fighters smaller than himself(Marquez, Pacquaio, Castillo)or fights older fighters(Oliveira, Tackie, Phillips), or only fights better fighters if the money is huge(De La Hoya, Mayweather).
I think its why Emmanuel Stewart doesnt let his fighters fight the best if he can help it letting them hold onto a title, (see Klitschko's last ten fights, see Cintron before Margarito II, also Stewart was against Taylor fighting Spinks because of fear Taylor not looking good).
I think its why Margarito during his first title reign fought the likes of Diaz, Perez, Kyvelos, and Lujan, hardly mandatory material).
In the dog eat dog world of prizefighting can you blame those fighters for not risking much in order to stay relavant in the fight game? In a game when one day you're the topic of everyone's thread, only to lose and you're considered exposed, overrated, or worst, a has been, can one really blame the boxer.
