Age started boxing: 7.
First boxing memory: My first fight. I fought a kid who had had about three fights. I remember chasing him around the ring and making him cry until they stopped it. I was scared at first but won.
Inspiration: Definitely my daughter. Everything I do is for her.
Motivation: To prove a lot of people wrong. My critics say I’m not fast enough, I’m not skilled enough, and so on. I will prove them all wrong!
Favourite all-time fighter: Julio Cesar Chavez. I loved his never-say-quit attitude. Also Oscar De La Hoya, and at heavyweight Lennox Lewis – Lewis was way under-appreciated.
Best fight you have seen: Rid**** Bowe-Evander Holyfield I and Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo I.
Pre-fight meal: Whatever is on the menu. Just as long as I have enough time to digest it properly. I’m not fussy.
What do you do to relax: Play video games or sleep.
Pre-fight superstition: Ever since 2001, I have always worn new boxers (underwear) and new socks for a fight (laughs).
What training (if any) do you do between fights: I stay in the gym. Usually, about two or three days after a fight, I go and lift weights.
Typical breakfast: Omelette, any flavour.
Toughest part of being a boxer: The family side. It’s hard on them when you have to get in the zone and have your game face on and when you don’t really want to talk to anyone.
Last book you read: A book about the capture of Pablo Escobar (Colombian drug dealer) and his bringing to justice – street style justice.
Favourite film: I have two – Scarface, and Blood In Blood Out.
What car do you drive: A Toyota four cylinder.
Where do you train: At a little hole in the wall of a gym in Riverside, California. It’s called The Lincoln gym.
Training routine: I train three times a day. In the morning I go to the fitness centre for an hour and run and go on the fitness bike. Then, in the afternoon, I train in the boxing gym. I spar five rounds on the first day of camp, then six, and so on until I get to 10 or 11 rounds a day. Then, in the evening, I go back to the fitness centre.
Toughest man faced: Domonic Jenkins. His record’s not much to look at, but he’s a real tough guy. He hit me hard!
What supplements do you take: Just multi-vitamins.
What would you be if you weren’t a boxer: Either a carpenter or a construction worker. My dad was a carpenter.
Last place you went on holiday: It wasn’t really a holiday, but I went to Mexico City for a three-day publicity tour. It was like a holiday to me, though.
Favourite football team: The Oakland Raiders.
Best boxer in the sport today: Without a doubt, Floyd Mayweather.
ENJOY!
