To all those who call Calzaghe great

The only thing i'm sure of by now is that your IQ is lower than Ruiz's age at the time of that fight, In fact it is probably lower than it was when he first laced up his gloves.I'm sure by now you should know that 32 is very young for a heavyweight but very old for the rest.Comment

Jones would have easily beat Joe in his prime, but that doesn't automatically disqualify you as a great fighter. Jones toyed with Toney and Hopkins, both of whom I consider great fighters. If the only way we give the label "great" to a fighter is by his ability to beat Roy Jones in his prime, then there have not been any great fighters this era from 160 - 175.no doubt about it mate - joe didn't fight the best jones. but i think we can safely say that when we step back and look at their careers that joe does deserve to be mentioned as one of the great fighters of his era.
personally i think joe would be jones worst nightmare - if RJJ is superman then joe is his kryptonite.
i think joe himself viewed the bout as unfinsihed buisness. i think he wanted to test his skills against the best fighter of his generation. if there was one figt i would like to have seen over the last 10 years it was joe vs jones.
Bottom line:
Jones was the closest thing to UNBEATABLE in his prime.
Joe is a talented fighter, anyone who says otherwise is just bias. All of the HBO and Showtime announcers recognize Joes talents and his special abilities, i'd take their word against any of yours.Comment

FFS, nobody thinks that. But the 'best' Jones wasn't on offer, in the absence of a time machine.
What really pees me off about this sort of crap is that it disrespects both fighters. The Calzaghe/Jones fight was, to all intents and purposes agreed between the two of them by cellphone. The purse was instantly agreed at 50:50 because both men wanted the fight for one reason, to find out who was best, a 2008 Calzaghe or a 2008 Jones . It was Calzaghe - end of story. Whether it was a 'prime' Jones or not has f**k all to do with anything.Comment

Calzaghe is a talented fighter but I think it bothers some people that Joe never moved up to 175 to face Roy back in his prime. Then, Joe goes around trying to boost his legacy by telling everyone he beat two legends, Hopkins and Jones Jr. in their backyard. Yes, it is true, he beat two "legends," but he forgets to point out that Hopkins was 43, and a former middleweight, and Roy, who started his career at 154, was Shot.Come on. Honestly. I find it hard to believe that any genuine fan of boxing refuses to admit Calzaghe has talent.
Sure, his fighting style isn't going to suit everyone's differing tastes. But I think it's silly to argue he's some Joe Schmoe off the street - anyone could achieve similar results ... etc.
Such claims devalue the entire sport, IMO.
I never heard Marciano say he beat a legend in Joe Louis and go around bragging about it.
Or even Tyson when he knocked out Larry Holmes, who was past his prime, but wasn't shot. Larry did have a decent second career.
Even Lewis: Lennox said way before the fight that Tyson was a has-been and the only reason he is going to fight Tyson was to finish Tyson off and let the people know Tyson is no more. Lennox had no way around it but to fight Tyson.
Danny Williams: After beating Mike Tyson he said that this isn't a prime Mike Tyson.
It's like Vitali: he needs to STFU already about wanting to get old Man Lewis in the ring. It does nothing for him but cater to his own ego.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 11-17-2008, 09:22 PM.Comment
