Taylor Routs Lacy in Battle of Ex-Olympic Teammates

By Jake Donovan - Former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor punched his way back into title contention with a lopsided points win over old Olympic teammate Jeff Lacy in their 12-round super middleweight main event at the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tennessee.

The bout was just the seventh time former US Olympic teammates met one another in the pro ranks, with the first such encounter since Virgil Hill’s 1994 light heavyweight title defense against Frank Tate.

The final scores were eerily similar in both fights, with the aftermath perhaps serving as a precursor of things to come for both Taylor and Lacy; Hill went on to bigger and better things at light heavyweight, and later at cruiserweight, while Tate’s days as a legitimate title contender functionally ended.

Both fighters began at a safe distance, measuring the other up in determining their course of attack. Taylor landed the first significant punch of the fight, a right hand that came behind a double jab. The infamous Arkansas Razorback “Pig Soowee” chant began to fill the arena, serving as a reminder that Taylor was in fact the crowd favorite, even if five hours away from his hometown of Little Rock, Ark. Taylors plan should be go for the WBC belt, force a unification with Kessler. Would love to see that fight. Taylor can really take 168 over IMO.

Given the 'great' ticket sales for Lacy, Calzaghe having to come to Taylor is laughable at best.

Jake, third from last paragraph, I think you mean "three fight winning streak", not losing streak, for Lacy.

Calzaghe needs to fight dawson, taylor and some young cats imo, too go down as the a real legend, but right now If i was taylor i would fight kessler next...He's avaible...Kessler is so stationary so I think taylor could beat him face the winner froch-pascal beat them...Ko bute because well hes garbage...Then he would clean out the super middle weights then he could focus on getting Joe...3 more fights and you can do it :-)

Joe Calzaghe would throw Taylor such a beating, it would be just like what he did to Jeff Lacy...After watching that fight last night, Calzaghe must be chomping at the bit to get a fight signed against Taylor...it would further establish him as the best fighter out there........Taylor fights in spurts and still exhibits stamina problems towards the end of fights......Taylor did quite a bit of holding last night in order to avoid potential big shots from Lacy.......In my opinion Taylor would not be able to handle the onslaught of punches that Calzaghe would throw at him, and subsequently would get embarassed by Calzaghe.....There's no one out there that can contend with his style of fighting.........Chad Dawson is probably the best bet, but he too has problems with stamina and also fights in spurts......Calzaghe fights like a machine

Jermain's jab is a dangerous weapon. He has a chance against Calzaghe IMO, but Calzaghe would be the favorite.

How do you guys like the idea of Dawson fighting Taylor next? That would surely make at least some of you mad for reason i can imagine. But would that be possible or likely? Dawson need some big stage fight now and i think Taylor would be awesome in more than a way!
