Mike Tyson News: Tyson chased for fight in Australia

Former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson is being targeted for a fight in Australia, it was reported today.

Former multi-world champion Jeff Fenech, now a boxing trainer and promoter, said he would travel to the United States next week to try and lure the 38-year-old Tyson to Australia and a fight with New Zealand-born Kali Meehan.

"I think it would be a great venue for him," Fenech told Channel Nine today. "I think Australians would flock to see a Tyson fight."

Tyson has arthroscopic surgery last August to repair the knee injury he suffered in the first round of his loss to Danny Williams in Kentucky in late July.

Fenech said Tyson was keen to visit Australia 18 months ago but he ran into problems with authorities.

"He wanted to bring a couple of friends who had criminal records so it made it difficult," former triple world champion Fenech said.

Meehan, who lives in Australia, is training for a November 13 heavyweight fight with former WBC and International Boxing Federation world champion Hasim Rahman in New York.

I agree with you completley, I went to Meehans profile at boxrec.com and he is 6'5. Tyson shouldn't fight someone that big in his return bout.

Just saw clips of Meehan's fight with Brewster and relized this probably would a bad return fight for Tyson. All Meehan would have to do is keep Mike on the outside with the jab and take him into the later rounds. I with neils7147933 Tyson should fight a smaller heavyweight at this stage in his career. Fighters like Meehan are tall and hard to hit, don't get me wrong Tyson could take Meehan out early with a big punch. This is the same guy Danny Williams Knocked out in 1 round.

Tyson lost to Williams because when Danny would get rocked he would just lay on Mike - bad knee, apparent poor conditioning, and 260 lbs of opponent will kill you. Mike was up by 5 points after 4 rounds, but I remember feeling anxious because he looked tired already. Meehan may not KO him, but he has the potential to beat him. Tyson should fight someone around 210 lbs and work his way up.

I know they're not in favor of "playing it cautious" but he ought to face a guy with double digit losses too. Someone who can stay up an entire round but is no big threat. He should fight 3-4 times in 2005.

Yes, but 30 second KOs can be "flukes." Meehan's only true loss was that bout - he outpointed Brewster. John Ruiz was destroyed in about that amount of time vs. David Tua, but I like Ruiz if he fought Tyson.

That being said, Tyson could KO 1 either guy (or Williams in a rematch) and I wouldn't be shocked. Tyson still has at least part of his power left and is dangerous - but as the fight progresses, I don't like his chances against any guy mentioned in this thread so far. Not yet anyway - I hope he comes back all the way.

I don't know what you meant by that, but tyson needs to fight guys like Meehan and Williams after a few fights back.

There are plenty of guys like McBride that can make Tyson look fantastic.
