Illness forces Miranda to withdraw from fight vs. Esparza
By Dan Rafael
Edison Miranda's comeback will have to wait.
The exciting super middleweight puncher from Colombia was scheduled to fight Emmanuel Esparza on Tuesday night in Hollywood, Fla., but withdrew from the bout because of illness, his promoter said.
"He has been running a high fever since Friday and saw a doctor Saturday, who said he needed some bed rest," said Leon Margules of promoter Seminole Warriors Boxing.
In June, Miranda (30-3, 26 KOs) faced middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham in a much-anticipated non-title rematch and was knocked out in the fourth round.
In Tuesday's main event, former light heavyweight champ Glen Johnson (47-12-2, 32 KOs) returns to action for the first time since losing a nip-and-tuck decision to titleholder Chad Dawson in April. He'll face Aaron Norwood (26-10-2, 13 KOs) in a 10-rounder.
Also on the card, James McGirt Jr. (19-1, 9 KOs), son of former world champion and top trainer Buddy McGirt, faces Marcus Upshaw (8-3, 3 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight fight. A McGirt victory will propel him into a higher-profile match Jan. 17 on HBO with "Kid Chocolate" Peter Quillin at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.
