Agree, Hopkins isn't "SHOT" but he is past his prime...way past compared to Calzaghe.
He did lose to Taylor TWICE, remember that. And for me, there was a reason: Taylor, unlike Pavlik, was the better athlete and wasn't stiff and so predictable like mechanical Pavlik who is also slower. Pavlik also was exposed in another way: Hopkins shut him down Mentally and Physically by taking away his weapons early and confusing him. He let the over-confident Pavlik (and his trainer) go into a fight thinking Hopkins had nothing left, but like Hopkins said, when Pavlik goes into that ring, what is he going to do when he finds out that the Old Man isn't so Old after all.
Tarver: Tarver, like Jones, ruined his body's equilibrium when he came back down. Tarver said it himself, he felt "flat." Age, wear and tear from Johnson battles, increased muscle weight, then losing it = Old Hopkins win.
43 is still Old for an athlete/boxer no matter how you get around it.
But he is just not "Shot" like Gatti, Roy and Holyfield.Comment

i think most of us are aware that age doesn't always mean your automatically shot. it varies between boxer to boxer, and many factors contribute including not only the boxers age but also their ring age. a lot of mexicans in the lower weight classes have been professional boxers since they were 14 yrs old, have not been protected and have been in many wars and they often have no legs before they even turn 30.
but age is often a huge factor in boxing, along with many other factors, including reach, activity, level of competition etc. but its not the only factor in determining whether a fighter is shot or not.
age also may contribute to the kind of boxer the person is, if there a reflex boxer that uses there legs a lot, with age the reflexes just naturally dull. but on the other hand if your that kind of fighter you may have taken little punishment in your career so it may even out a little in the end.Last edited by -Boxzilla-; 11-10-2008, 02:00 PM.Comment

That's OK, it happens. It's like the HOF in other sports: If you really look at it, I would say, and this is a guess, 80% should be taken out if we wanted to only put in the "God" like fighters/players/athletes.
There are God like fighters; those once in a generation fighter. And then there are "Great" fighters...then "Very Good"..."Good"...and so on.Comment

It's funny because I think people get it mixed up the other way too. Shot doesn't mean old. Look at a fighter like Erik Morales. I've told people that his recent losses were out of his prime and they come back with, "He was only 29 or 30". When a fighter deteriorates is based on many different things.Comment
