By Cliff Rold - The recent upset wins in Bernard Hopkins-Kelly Pavlik and Vic Darchinyan-Cristian Mijares created a feeling among some in the Boxing community that Roy Jones Jr. (52-5, 38 KO) had a real shot at an upset of his own this past Saturday night. Those members of the Boxing community forgot that the 36-year old Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight titlist Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO) isn’t Pavlik or Mijares. [details]

Before this fight, Atlas had a great reputation for picking fights, but getting his Calzaghe-Jones prediction wrong will really change the way that people see him.

- In regards to the fight I am about as good a judge apparently as Teddy. I really thought RJJ had more in the tank then he did.

Personally I'd love to see a Calzaghe Hopkins rematch. Hopkins made Calzaghe look really bad in that fight. Having said that Hopins looked tired in the second half. It was an interesting battle of styles. The fact is it wasn't a clear decision. Some people think Calzaghe won and some think Hopkins won (including the BBC). They're both coming off tremendous performances. I know that Calzahge wouldn't want to risk his unbeaten streak and risk looking bad though. It isn't necessarily a wise decision. I'm not saying he would lose but it is a big risk for him. Really what effective punches did he land in the Hopkins fight. He had one straight left that didn't do much. That's all they could show from the highlights of that fight. Would you really guarantee a Calzaghe fight if they fought again? I don't think so, just as I wouldn't guarantee a Hopkins victory.

Forgot to give Calzaghe credit. He looked really good against Jones. He dominated the fight. He beat him badly enough that I felt sorry for Jones. His movement, speed and combinations were impressive. Jones is clearly past his prime though. There is no way Calzaghe could stand with his hands down and head in between Jones's gloves, if Jones was in his prime. Overall I have a new respect for Calzaghe. It's too bad that he wasn't able to prove himself earlier in his career, so we could see what he was really made of.

calzage isnt proven
He fight exclusivly in europe and he wins a very contreversial decision over bhop and right away does not want a rematch. He beat a shot RJJ. If he wanted to prove him self he would have left suppermiddle weight that like the cruiser weight of boxing no one cares. had he stepped up earlier to light heavy weights fought a prime roy tarver bhop and any of the big names ten years ago he would get more creditabilty.

rematch this, rematch that fight dawson, fight pavlik etc when are people just going to stop asking questions of calz? as soon as hes beaten someone everyone just goes on about how rubbish the opponent was. most the people now saying jones is shot were the people saying jones was gonna beat him before the fight. if he fights and beats dawson people will use the exact same arguments that they used after the lacy fight, inexperienced etc. face it, hes the one of the best boxers ever.
