Firstly, let me say, I would love to see this fight. I think Dawson is tremendous and I definitely see him beating Calzaghe.
However, I wouldn't like to see him beat a diminished version of Calzaghe.
Is he dimished yet? No, he's past his physical prime, but if you look at his fights against Kessler an RJJ, he is still close to his peak.
But let's say Dawson fights him at 37, and Calzaghe is noticably slower and his workrate has dropped big time. How much joy could Dawson fans take from that victory, you know? Knowing that he didn't beat a stellar version of Calzaghe.
It's why I think some of you should calm down regarding last night's fight. Calzaghe beat a diminished version of RJJ. It's a name on his record, nothing else.
If Dawson were to fight Calzaghe, it would have to happen soon. And if Calzaghe was very competitive during the fight and lost, then I would really enjoy the victory, as a Dawson fan and Calzaghe hater.
But where's the sense of satisfaction in beating a diminished version of a fighter?
