it might but we know for sure that Johnson ain't there to survive to the 12th and will be throwing punches and not trying to clinch, run, or make it a close fight. It could turn out to be an all out brawl if Calz decides to come forward. -
A lacy fight is a good comparison. Johnson is a helluva fighter, unlike Lacy, but his stylistic nightmare is a person who can throw a lot of combos and move just at the right time with the right reflexes.
Dawson tried to do this, but he didn't have the defense and tried to trade with him insted. Hopkins accomplished this and it would be like Hopkins-Johnson for Calzaghe-Johnson imo.Comment

Johnson didn't have that volume puncher pressure style at that time, he was more of a defense minded boxer who was somewhat slick and a counter puncher, and he was not elite when he did that. That's why he changes his style from that to a pressure fighter and since he has had that style, he has not been dominated.A lacy fight is a good comparison. When Dawson would box, he would have control over the fight. He didn't run into problems until he traded with Johnson.
I see this as being a close fight. Calzaghe would possibly win on his work rate but he would be catching a lot of leather from Johnson, because Joe would need to get his punches off and Johnson would there to counter punch. He showed in the Dawson fight that he has speed himself.Last edited by slicksouthpaw16; 11-09-2008, 09:58 PM.Comment

you are seriously overestimating glen johnson's ability to counter. he waits for his opponent to get his shots off before countering. the shot he caught dawson with in the 10th was a right hand shot, but by no means a counter. calzaghe is way to fast and slick for glen.Johnson didn't have that volume puncher pressure style at that time, he was more of a defense minded boxer who was somewhat slick and a counter puncher, and he was not elite when he did that. I've said that stylistically Calzaghe is bad for Johnson and we saw against Jones how well Calzaghe can get his punches off when his opponents just walk towards him with high hands, which is something Johnson does as well, Johnson waits for his opponents to stop punching before punching back, Calzaghe doesn't stop punching. Calzaghe by clear decision.Comment

He has the ability to block punches while coming forward and he has that catch and counter style. Just look at around the last 10 seconds in the 3rd round of the Dawson fight. He blocked his flurry and countered him with a right hand followed by a left hook. The only reason why he didn't counter after that was because Dawson didn't give him the opportunity, and was more aware after that. Calzaghe and Dawson are completely different. Joe takes more chances than Dawson does so he will be getting hit with those same kind of counters because he is squared up after he throws. Trust me, i have this fight saved to my DVR and i have watched it over 30 times( at least).you are seriously overestimating glen johnson's ability to counter. he waits for his opponent to get his shots off before countering. the shot he caught dawson with in the 10th was a right hand shot, but by no means a counter. calzaghe is way to fast and slick for glen.
Johnson would be letting his hands go and he is much stronger than Jones. Also, Johnson was punching with Dawson, something that hasn't been done before and he countered well.I've said that stylistically Calzaghe is bad for Johnson and we saw against Jones how well Calzaghe can get his punches off when his opponents just walk towards him with high hands, which is something Johnson does as well, Johnson waits for his opponents to stop punching before punching back, Calzaghe doesn't stop punching.
