And Sometimes...

this makes calzaghe look even worse in most peoples eyes. almost getting ko'd by a beyond shot fighter and not being able to finish him off. if calzaghe is great than glen johnson is god.Comment

Just something surreal to watch, hard to stomach when you see one of your favorite fighters for the last time.
I still have Hopkins, but losing Roy is going to be tough to handle knowing that it's just totally over.Comment

Yeah but Cotto lost to a one-dimensional slugger while in his prime, so he doesn't belong in the same sentence as great fightersComment

After you get over all the excitement and watch the fight again, you will see it my way. We generally seem to agree on these sorts of things.I definitely disagree with you, it wasn't just his stamina, he couldn't get his punches off anymore as the fight went on, it's a classic case of a fighter getting old and he was taking a lot of shots in there, maybe you didn't see them but he was taking a lot of shots, way more shots than I have seen him take cleanly. His speed also got worse as the fight went on, he needs to know how to call it a day and today is the day to do that, I don't want to see him get hurt, it's clear he can't beat the top level guys anymore.
I agree about the cornerwork though, horrible job working on that cut.
Roy was getting off his punches. Roy threw, and landed around the same number of punches has he usually does in a fight.
Joe Calzaghe out throwing Roy 3-1 does not mean Roy can't get off. Roy got off when Roy felt safe to get off. There were times when I could see that Joe was trying to lay a trap for Roy and the people watching with me were like "WHY IS HE SITTING THERE! WHY DOESN'T HE HIT HIM!" Roy saw what I saw. Thats what Joe was trying to get him too do.
Roy wasn't having problems getting off, we wasn't having problems pulling the trigger, he wasn't having problems with hand speed, we wasn't having problems with stamina. He was having problems with Joe.
The problem is that every time Roy found something, Joe took it away. there was a point in the fight were Roy was consistently counter Joe with left hooks. Joe took it away.
There was a point in the fight were Roy was consistently tagging Joe with uppercuts. Joe took it away.
In a fight with two equally brilliant ring tacticians, the fighter with the better support system wins. Thats what happened tonight.
Roy ended up spending time blocking, and that is the key word, blocking Joes punches trying to figure out a way to get some work done.
The problem with this is the man he is fighting. As we saw in the first round, Joe reacts to getting hit by fighting back with a vengeance. You can't sit on the ropes and limit a man like thats work rate by counter punching. It just makes him throw more punches.
Roy isn't shot. He is old, his stamina is not what it use to be, and he failed to adapt.Comment

It wasn't just Jones not being able to get off, it was the little things in there that he just can't do anymore.
His speed slowed perceptibly as the fight went on, he got very predictable as well, right hand leads was his only good punch as the fight went on and I believe he was having trouble letting his hands go, as we saw early in the fight, Calzaghe had trouble with Jones' speed which dropped off as the fight went on.
And Jones didn't block that effectively as the fight went on, Calzaghe was landing a lot of shot on Jones, both to the body and head.
I'm not trying to discredit Calzaghe's victory but it is what it is, Jones is nowhere near what he once was and I can't see him beating any of the top guys at 175 right now, it's time for a once great fighter to retire, no reason in going on and getting hurt.Comment
