  • Jones vs Calzaghe Breakdown

Its fight day, so i decided to make a skills breakdown of the fight between Jones and Calzaghe. the scoring system works like this:

First the fighter gets a grade (eg A+, B, C-) for a particular attribute (eg speed)
then, i put a number (1-5) on how much it will be a factor/use in the fight, so a number 1 = not much of a factor and 5= huge factor.

So, for example it would look like this:
    Speed
    Calzaghe A-, 4

    Here Goes:

    Power
    Calzaghe B-,2 - Roy A-, 5

Both men's Power has Declined, Calzaghe's considerably because of his constant hand injuries. however, Roy still has one punch KD power and a decent pop in his punches, if he uses his power well he will be able to gain Calzaghes respect and make him think before rushing in. Major Factor for Roy

    Handspeed
    Calzaghe A-, 4 - Roy A, 4

The handpeed Margin is more or less the same, however Roy does have the one punch quickness advantage. Speed will play a big part in the fight for both fighters. if the fight is kept in the middle of the ring then it will all depend on who gets the punches in first.

    Footspeed
    Calzaghe B+, 5 - Roy C+, 4

It is clear thar Roy doesnt move his feet as much as he used to in his prime, Calzaghes footspeed still looks to be pretty sharp. Calzaghe will need to use his feet alot if he wants to slip Roy's punches and make him use his old legs to follow him, however Footspeed will also play a big part in the fight for Roy. if he can stay off the ropes and move around, keep the action in the centre of the ring where Calzaghe cant flurry away, then he will be able to pot shot Calzaghe all night long.

    Stamina/Workrate
    Calzaghe A+, 5 - Roy B, 5

Stamina and Workrate will be the biggest factor in the fight. it is clear Calzaghe has the clear edge in this field, however if both fighters keep their workrate high, it could make the difference between a win and a loss if the fight goes 12.

    Defense/Guard
    Calzaghe C, 1 - Roy A-, 3

Calzaghe's defense is his offense, he rarely puts his hands up or backs away from a fighter. it is clear Roy has the clear advantage in this field, wether or not he will use the exceptional defense he did against tito we will have to see, but it plays a major part in the fight for Roy if he gets tired/hurt and wants to avoid a TKO/KO. he can also use calzaghe's bad defense to his advantage, however if he uses too much defense, he could see the rounds slip away to the more agressive fighter.

    Combinations
    Calzaghe B+, 2 - Roy A-, 4

Both men throw good combinations, the difference is however that firstly Roy doesnt throw as many as he used to, and secondly Calzaghes style of combination punching may not impress the judges. either way, whoever can get their combinations off will most likely see themselves leading on the judges cards.

    Chin
    Calzaghe A-, 4 - Roy C+, 2

It is Clear Roy doesnt have a chin of granite, but neither does Calzaghe. both men have been down before, Calzaghe in his last bout from a semi-powerful straight right hand. Will Calzaghe's chin be able to hold out if Roy hits him Flush? This is what will be a big factor in the fight. Calzaghe hitting Roy flush isnt much to worry about, as his power at this point wont be much to worry about. however, from an accumulation of punches, we may see either fighter go down.

    Heart
    Calzaghe A+, 4 - Roy A, 5

Heart will play a huge factor in the fight too. Calzaghe may need to get up off the canvas if he gets hit with something big, and Roy will need to pull out of the last few rounds when he gets tired. either way, if both men display the heart and determination they are (were) known for, the fight will most likely go 12.

    Legs
    Calzaghe A-, 2 - Roy B-, 4

Roy's legs are not what they once used to be, they looked skinny at the weigh-in too. He cant move around the ring for very long like he used to, but he still can be effective when he fights on the back foot. Calzaghe's legs arent much to worry about, as long as he doesnt get hit with bombs the full 12 rounds, i can see him staying strong throughout the fight.

    Reflexes
    Calzaghe B-, 2 - Roy B-, 1

Calzaghe's reflexs have never been great, and Roy's have diminished alot. however reflexes wont play much of a factor in this fight. although it is a primarily a speed based fight, i see Calzaghe not doing much to try and slip Roy's punches, and instead pushing forward, and Roy keeping his arms up when Calzaghe Flurries away.

    Ring Smarts
    Calzaghe B+, 4 - Roy A-, 5

Both fighters are very intelligent in the ring, Calzaghe has the ability to adjust his gameplan halfway through a fight, and Roy is very good at figuring opponents out too. Roy is going to have to come into the ring with a plan on how to cut down Calzaghes workrate.

    Ring Movement/Agility
    Calzaghe B+, 3 - Roy C+, 2

Today, Calzaghe is more agile than Roy in the ring and moves around the ring alot more than Roy does. Roy likes to lean back on the ropes and take a break, however this may not be good against Calzaghe who will flurry away, scoring on the judges cards. However Roy might not need to move around a lot anyway, because Calzaghe will be pushing forward all night as the agressor.

    Determination
    Calzaghe A+, 5 - Roy A+, 5

Both men are mentally determined to win this fight, they both want to win his fight badly and will give their all to win. It is Calzaghe's last fight so he will be determined to go out with a ****, and it is Roy's last shot at winning back what he lost, and potentially making arguably the biggest fight in boxing right now. This will be a huge factor in the fight for both men.

    Counter-Punching
    Calzaghe C+, 1 - Roy A-, 5

Calzaghe isnt really a counerpuncher, Roy is extremely good at countering/sharpshooting off the ropes, and this is what Calzaghe will have to look out for. Calzaghe wont really need to counterpunch as i see Roy's workrate being relatively low and him fighting in spurts, however he Calzaghe needs to be wary of Roy's straight right and left hook off the ropes, which could drop him and give Roy a 10-8 round.

    Styles
    Calzaghe B-, 2 - Roy A+, 5

Styles make fights, and Roy has the perfect style to beat Calzaghe. If Roy can take a leaf out of Hopkins' book and do wha he did against Calzaghe but with a higher workrate, we may see him hitting home with the right hand all night long, however Calzaghe will constantly pressure Roy too, just like Johnson did, so if Roy runs out of gas late in the fight we may see Calzaghe drop/KO Roy. The styles however favour Jones, as he wil be hard to hit and will counter Calzaghe whenever he throws a wide punch or makes a mistake.

I know its not perfect but its the best i could come up with off the top of my head

    Anything I Missed?

Good breakdown. I just see Calzaghe's workrate being the deciding factor though.
