By Rick Reeno - New York's Madison Square Garden, also known as the Mecca of boxing, will play host to the final career bout of Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32KOs). Calzaghe's entire fifteen-year career is riding on the shoulders of this event. He was the super middleweight champion for over a decade and accumulated a record of 21 successful defenses. Calzaghe's legacy, regardless of his past accomplishments, would take a nice hit if Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs), nearly 40-years-old and past his prime, pulled off the upset. I myself am having doubts about this fight. With ***** winning the president election and Hopkins absolutely dominating Pavlik, Jones confidence and motivation is the highest that its been in many years, and he also has the style win or lose that will give Joe plenty of problems.
In order for Jones to win, he will have to do what Hopkins did against Pavlik. Know that he does not have the stamina to keep up with his busier opponents pace, he will have to time Calzaghe and make every single punch count so when he does land, it will be very effective to the judges and Joe will think twice about coming in( that way he could pace himself). That would neutralize Joe's work rate and would make the fight tactical, and that would strongly favor Jones in this fight as he is the faster fighter and the better outside boxer.
I am now leaning towards a Jones decision. I am having that same feeling that i had when Bernard beat Pavlik, and i called it the night before( just like now). I think Roy will outsmart Joe in the end and the judges will like his power advantage.Comment

At least a couple of those people showed a little thought, and a few were just unprofessional by saying "I just dont like Joe. Roy by UD." I also like how the people picking Jones point to Hopkins win as a justification. They picked Hopkins and Jones for the same reason Teddy picks "underdogs" every time. Only because they hope to look brilliant by getting a long shot call right. I will be the first to agree that prime for prime, Roy would batter Joe around the ring. But not now. Roy hasnt done anything against ****ty fighters for years. He hasnt stopped anyone in years (even fighters stopped by "non punchers".) Roy could land the perfect punch and stop Joe, otherwise he is in for a long night. I know alot of you love Roy and are hoping for a miracle, but be realistic. Hopkins winning doesnt mean Roy will win. ***** winning doesnt mean Roy will win. This fight stands all alone, and the facts dont look good for Roy.Comment

Mijares had the worst style match up for Darchinayin and not only did he lose, but he was knocked out after being beaten up. Pavlik also had a bad style for Hopkins. Its the styles that makes the fight. Jones has the style to pull it off, its depends on how much he has left.Comment

Amy Green: "Joe Calzaghe is rude, insulting..." - No, Calzaghe slaps his way around the ring is a fair comment. But outside of that ring he's a gent, it's Enzo Calzaghe whose rude and insulting/clinically insane. Ms. Green sounds a bit uninformed here for me.
As for the fight, I have a su****ion that Calzaghe is going to go for the knockout (if it's his last fight he doesn't need to worry about those hands anymore) - whether he manages it or gets caught by a Jones counter as a resut - we'll see.Comment
