By Cliff Rold - While unsure where the superstition about things happening in threes got started, like most superstitions it leaves an impression in the back of the mind. In the last three weeks, two fights have featured prohibitive underdogs with big names assumed to be on their last legs. In both, rumors of any ring demise were more than exaggerated as both Bernard Hopkins and Vic Darchinyan made mince meat of Kelly Pavlik and Cristian Mijares respectively. Before those fights, Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KO) vs. Roy Jones (52-4, 38 KO) looked like a farewell tour for both with Calzaghe seeking to end undefeated and Jones just seeking an end. [details]

Why do people still think fans of Roy will see "the old Roy?" I know I have stated he needs to channel his prime abilities, but come on. People have often argued that a prime Roy Jones wouldn't have lost a round to JC. So, for the sake of argument, let's say he's just above 50% of his former self, which I believe to be more. He still wins. If he comes in at 60-65% of what he used to be, which is more on the accuracy level, he wins confortably. He may have aged, he may have been knocked out twice but Roy Jones Jr., like what I feel Mayweather is/was, is one of those boxers who we rarely see in a lifetime. My desire for the former brilliance he has shown to appear at the opening bell hasn't, with the help of the likes of dance for instance, made me feel like this is a lock. I just won't believe until it's over that the lock JC seems to have by the press, his fans and most loudly his father, is true. WAR ROY! -
Well-written post here and I get your point. Fact is though that Joe C. has always measured up when it counted. Why do people still think fans of Roy will see "the old Roy?" i'm just hoping for a good fight. the "old" roy is gone.....
roy still has the speed, and the ability to throw combinations, that none of calzaghe's opponents have ever possed. not to mention the power advantage roy has too.
the only thing i question is roy's chin. calzaghe will throw a lot of punches, roy has the speed to get outta the way and return fire....both guys will get hit, the question is, will roy's chin hold up? the advantage in power roy possesses may be offset by the fact that the right punch can hurt him at any time. its also tough to make a prediction here b/c, as this writer states, roy hasn't fought a top 10 guy in years, so im not to sure about judging his chances against calzaghe, by his fights w/ prince, hanshaw, and trinidad......
all that being said, if i had to bet, i'd bet calzaghe by SD. more so b/c of this diminished version of roy, rather than calzaghe's abilities. in a way, this fight will tell us more about roy jones than it does calzaghe.....
i see a close fight, coming down to a SD. i dont see anyone getting stopped, and the fight will be a toss up when it goes to the cards...... im pulling for roy to win, in dramatic fashion, cuz i want hopkins to get his hands on him next, plus i dislike calzaghe.......
wishful thinking tho. calzaghe by SD. hope to hell i'm wrong.Comment
