Joe beat some good opponents.
Hopkins: no explanation should be needed, except Hopkins has proven he is far from old by humiliating America's latest great white hype, Kelly Pavlik. No disrespect to Kelly, I like him, but he's young, still learning, and loses badly to anyone with good lateral movement.
Sakio Bika: OK, he's just a contender, not elite, but if you watch that fight you'll understand what a strong guy he is, and he used every dirty tactic in the book to rough Joe up and try to steal his glory. Epic fail, Sakio. This win is kinda dismissed, but looking closer at the details it's clear to see Bika is a nightmare to deal with. This was the first time Joe was cut in a pro fight.
Manfredo: Joe did it for the money. Forget it. He's openly stated he had no interest in this fight.
Mikkel Kessler: Doesn't get the credit he deserves. A beautifully clean fighter who rarely clinches or uses any illegal tactics. Gave a great account of himself and pushed Joe for a while, then eventually looked clueless on how to deal with him. Great win. Mikkel was undefeated, 39-0 at the time, and will go on to do great things, IMO.
Jeff Lacy: Say whatever you want about Lacy after the fact. If some want to discredit Joe's win here they have no clue about boxing. Lacy, as we know, was kinda what Pavlik was before Hopkins annihilated him. Jeff was America's next big star, he was dubbed "The next Tyson" and was supposedly, according to many fighters, writers and critics throughout the boxing world, going to destroy Calzaghe within a few rounds.
Rebin Reid: A tough guy who gave an injured and sick Joe Calzaghe a pretty hard night's work. Robin agreed after the fight that Joe won, though it was a close and competitive fight. I had Joe a few points up. Robin did well but was out-boxed, though he continually caught Joe with hard right hand bombs all night. To Joe's credit, he showed an immense chin, because apparently Rob had a good punch on him back then (1999).
Chris Eubank: This is still one of Joe's best wins and was one of the hardest fights Joe has had to date. I shouldn't have to make any explanations here, the guy was a huge star at the time. Great win for a 25 year-old Joe Calzaghe. Eubank wasn't that old, only 31.
There are other solid wins, such as Richie Woodhall. Most of the other opponents were average, and for this, Calzaghe is occasionally criticized. Considering that 1) Calzaghe is considerably better than anyone they threw him in with. Joe shouldn't be blamed because he blew away the usual low-to-average quality opponents everyone else faces when turning pro, and did it early. 2) Frank Warren isn't the greatest risk taker. He likes to protect his investments, Joe Calzaghe did OK, made some fairly good money, but as for match-up's blame Frank Warren and Mickey Duff.
As for amateur accomplishments, he had more than 120 fights and was ABA champ 3 times in 3 weight classes over 3 consecutive years. Many people won't understand how difficult something like that is to achieve, especially if they live outside of the United Kingdom. It is a GREAT achievement for a British amateur, I doubt anyone else has done it since, and it was probably 100 years or something since the last person did it before Joe.
I am really not surprised people talk **** about Joe Calzaghe. They probably saw one or two of his fights, and one of those was probably Hopkins, IE, one of Joe's worst, ugliest performances due to Bernard Hopkins' style which is very difficult for anyone to look good against. On the other hand, it's one of Bernard's worst performances also, and that can only be down to Joe. This has been proven after Bernard beat Kelly Pavlik.
So... keep on disrespecting Calzaghe, but at least know what you're talking about before you do it.
