I have no bias towards any British fighter.

I don't agree. You say his fans are largely nationalistic, well I think Calzaghe's fan range is more universal. He has a lot of American support, they just don't like to raise their heads so much on forums in-case they're flamed. There are a few brave souls about though.

I'm not British, and Calzaghe is my favourite fighter today.

He is not the greatest fighter today, but he is one of the greatest boxers of today, and I have a a lot of fun reading all the Calzaghe hate messages. It makes me feel more unique, acknowledging the man for his accomplishments, and following him as I have done from 2003, instead of following the herd and adopting phrases like 'slapper' while only seeing 2 of his fights.

It's also great fun to see people ***** about him for his Hopkins fight, while totally ignore the amazing performance against Kessler. It says it all.

Finally, my theory is that a large % of people about here are unsettled by a completely down to earth champion who keeps his family close and his bodyguards/cronies at a distance. Come on people, not all boxers have to be part-time gangsters/*******s.

took my post personally and called me a knob.

                Case closed.

to starjammer: No disrespect...but you're from Ireland...making Calzaghe a pretty good choice to be your "favourite" and fully support....not very trailblazing or unique if you ask me...

I'm American and I like Calzaghe. Not a super fan mind you but I do appreciate him as a fighter. I said last year in this forum that the difference between Calzaghe and Hatton was that Joe was a very good fighter and people would eventually figure it out while Ricky was an exposure waiting to happen.

I must admit I'm rather baffled by people who hate on Calzaghe since I've never detected anything in him that would leave him open to it. Conversly I somewhat understand the tendency of British fans to be so rabid in their backing of UK fighters: Let's face it they have nothing really to cheer for in their society when they aren't rioting at insomnia curing soccer matches so it's only natural they'd root for the only real men their country produces

the greatest active boxer and doesn't need the respect from the American public to be considered great. He has nothing to prove.
