WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe says he is in great shape for his 14 December showdown with Thomas Tate.
But Calzaghe is already looking beyond that to a "superfight" with Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins.

The Welshman is confident that the fight - scuppered earlier this year by Hopkins' purse demands - can be arranged for next summer at the Millennium Stadium.

And Calzaghe is sure that he can dispose of the WBC, WBA and IBF Middleweight champion, rated by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

"I'll destroy him," said Calzaghe. "He's 37 now and his last good win was against Felix Trinidad 14 months ago.

"He's said some pretty derogatory things about me, that I haven't beaten anybody and don't deserve to be in the same ring with him.

"If that's the case why has he been avoiding me? I'll do a winner-takes-all - let's put our money together and go for that. Perhaps he knows it's likely to be his last fight.

"I've been champion for five years and I want to fight the great fighters. I want to prove that I'm not just the best super middleweight in the world, but the best pound-for-pound."

A bullish Calzaghe was adamant that the 14 December bill he shares with Ricky Hatton at the Telewest Arena, Newcastle, was really his show.

"I like Ricky, he's a nice guy and a great fighter, but I'm the world champion on the night, he's my understudy," said the Newbridge brawler.
Hatton will defend his WBU Light Welterweight title against Brazilian Antonio Mesquita.

Calzaghe was in more respectful mood when discussing his opponent on the night, Thomas Tate.

"Tate's a very experienced US fighter who's only been stopped once, by the great Roy Jones Jr." Calzaghe added.

Like Charles Brewer, he's well known across the Atlantic but not in the UK. This fight is of the same standard as the Brewer match.''

"I'm in great form, punching hard, and I've got something to aim for - to follow Roy Jones and be the second man to knock this guy out.''

"I need to put on a big fight because 2003 is going to be my year."

Joe is almost 37 himself. Not exactly in his prime. Jones is literally a couple of years older, and Hopkins had a chance in 2002 but turned it down. WTF is Joe supposed to do?

Dawson isn't a big enough name for Joe, but more importantly -- people need to get off the hype train and think about what they are saying. It's unfair to build up a fighter like people are doing with Dawson -- who, might I add, just beat a 40 year old Tarver and arguably lost to a 39 year old Johnson, so there goes your "fight a live body" theory. What I see happening with Dawson is he's in danger of being hated at the drop a hat the first time he loses to an elite fighter, just as Pavlik is right now. People need to stop hyping up fighters until they are a little more proven. Instead we get "Dawson is for sure a Hall of Famer". Get real! You know for a fact that if he fought Joe and lost people would say "Dawson was never that good anyway". It happened with Pavlik, it happened with Lacy, and it happened with many fighters throughout the years.

Right now there's threads about "Why do you all hate Cotto?", "Pavlik is a ****ing BUM", etc. It's just sad how the supposed fans are so ready and willing to quit supporting fighters like that. 2 weeks ago, you wouldn't dream of seeing a thread calling Pavlik a bum.

Exactly,This reason I put this article up is to show that Calzaghe wanted to fight big names years ago.No matter what people say he hasn't ducked the best fighters.

                  Pure Ignorance.

Hopkins pulled out of fighting in 2002,Simple as that. That's not Calzaghe's fault.Roy Jones priced himself out of a fight on a few occasions.

Oh and by the way Roy Jones is only 39 which makes him only 3 years older than Calzaghe who is 36.

Basically Calzaghe's always wanted to fight big names.
Its ****** and ignorant of people to talk about Calzaghe as if he's purposely waited till Hopkins and Jones were older to fight them.He would have fought them years ago at the drop of a hat.

Like I said,This is why I brought up the aticle.

yes if he put up real money and not some lowball **** that he knew no one would accept. this way he could say they are ducking him when they don't even know he exists.

When did it become known as duckin' or avoidin' a fighter if you don't want to fight him in his house? Joe didn't say I'll go to America or any other place......he said the Millenium Stadium aka Joe's house.

Lets get this straight........Joe hadn't beaten NOBODY of great significance at this time. He was JUST the WBO champ. While B-Hop had just unified the 160 division and was ALREADY the UNDISPUTED champ in his division. I'm not sayin' Joe wasn't the man in division(because he was)
I'm just sayin' he didn't accomplish enough at that time to have an UNDISPUTED champ come to his house and accept his terms.....
Joe said those things because he already knew he wouldn't get a TOP star to come over to the UK and he had no intensions on goin' to America, so he was just playin' politician in that article.......As a matter of fact, the ONLY reason he fought B-Hop in America was the HBO contract he signed......his 3rd fight on their network had to be in the U.S. And since he got so much love in Vegas, he feels more comfortable fighting across the Atlantic........but we'll see how much he likes it when he finds out how much more Roy is loved than B-Hop. How will Joe respond to NOT having the crowd in a BIG fight?
