I don't know what those judges were watching. I thought Benitez schooled Duran and Hearns handily outboxed Benitez.
I don't see how the scores were as close as they were.
Just like Hagler-Duran, when Duran won 4 to 5 rounds but was winning after 13.
I was surprised by those scores too. Duran won some rounds, but for the most part Benitez controled the fight. same thing with Hagler, although I think I actually had Duran winning more rounds in that fight than he did against Benitez.
but then on the other hand I thought Duran deserved more rounds than the judges gave him in the Leonard fight. and then there was that horrible scorecard in the Leonard-Hagler fight...
judging seemed to be really bad when it came to those guys.
I had Duran winning by just a point in the Barkley fight, knockdown saved his ass. I remember one of the scorecards was terrible in Durans favor though.
The Hearns/Benitez fight is good, but the Duran/Benitez fight is terrible. Benitez fights very well in it but Duran looks so bad it's embarrassing. I actually can't watch that fight simple because the fighter you know that should be there isn't and in his place is some fat, slow guy that is completely gassed by the eighth round. That's got to be one of the worst, if not the worst, I've seen Duran look in a big fight.
Anyway, there was another thread somewhere which talked about if such and such a fighter had this physical ability would he have been the greatest. If Tommy Hearns had a great chin and a little bit better stamina I honestly think he would have been utterly unbeatable. The greatest ever P4P fighter in the history of the sport. Even with a semi-bad chin and not great stamina he's up there with the best. Can you imagine a guy with freak speed and the power to KO anyone along with brilliant boxing ability, fantastic reach and height as well as an iron chin and 15 round stamina?
