WHILE people are now talking of potential post-Dream Match fights for Manny Pacquiao, American promoter Bob Arum believes the Filipino sensation must focus first on Oscar de la Hoya and no one else. This was what Arum said when interviewed by the BusinessMirror recently.
“I don’t think there can be any greater motivation for Manny than to know how big this fight is, how much it would mean to him and to the Filipino people if he wins the fight,” Arum said.
Internet write-ups have been posted recently stating that Pacquiao may likely face British superstar Ricky Hatton and possibly former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the de la Hoya bout.
Despite the potential financial windfall Pacquiao will get in squaring off with those two fights, Arum said the December 6 card must be the sole motivation for the four-division champion if he really wants to establish his own legacy in the sport.
“That is his biggest motivation. There is nothing that can provide him with bigger motivation,” said Arum, referring to the de la Hoya fight.
Hatton is scheduled to fight Paulie Malignaggi on November 22 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mayweather, meanwhile, announced his retirement in his 10th-round stoppage of Hatton in December last year also in Las Vegas. Reports have it that Mayweather has been doing late-night training in selected gyms in Las Vegas.
In the same interview with the BusinessMirror, Arum said Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, the legendary Mexican trainer hired by de la Hoya, will be struggling in handling the Mexican-American boxing hero.
“Nacho Beristain will serve only one purpose, and that is to screw up Oscar. Nacho is a control freak and when he has a fighter from the beginning, like one of the Marquez brothers, he’s a terrific trainer,” said Arum. “If he’s gonna try to impose his style on Oscar, who is not a quick learner, all Nacho’s gonna do is screw him up. Wait till you see. Oscar’s gonna change his style and it’s not going to work.”
