  • Warren Say Joe Calzaghe Should Have Fought Pavlik

Promoter Frank Warren has continued to stand by his opinion that Joe Calzaghe should have fought Kelly Pavlik instead of Roy Jones Jr. Following Calzaghe's close points win over Bernard Hopkins in April, Warren tried to convince Calzaghe to fight Pavlik. He says the Welsh champion saw Jones as the much bigger fight and had not interest in meeting the middleweight champion from Youngstown. Last weekend in Atlantic City, Hopkins dominated Pavlik over twelve-rounds. Warren and Calzaghe split after the Hopkins fight and are now involved in a legal battle. [details]

And if Joe did that can you just imagine how many times we would hear

    "Pav was overrated anyway"

    He cant win Joe.
Not that my feelings are hurt by that or anything but thats the truth

Warren's not lying, Joe should've went for him when he had the chance. Instead he opted for another old, past prime legend.

And the old, past prime legend he just beat schooled Pavlik and cemented his legacy even further.

Joe's business savy is strong, but his choice of opponets is as awkward as his fighting style.

I don't really care what Warren thinks, he left sports network because Frank Warren is a **** promoter who can't provide for the big deals. Warren would still have him fighting the Sakio Bika's of the world.

Now he's got a fight with the biggest name in boxing over the last decade. I personally think it was the best move. If he beats Jones and then maybe Dawson then no one can make any comments about his resume.

Truthfully, Joe should've left Frank after the Lacy fight.

He became known around the world after that performance.

Following up that win with the fights against Peter Manfredo Jr, and Sakio Bika is as almost as laughable as Joe's assertion that Manfredo was a "great American star".

Warren makes a good point. Joe would have easily outboxed Pavlik, but in fighting Jones there is a possibility of losing a close decision. I'm worried that the New York area judges may be a factor in the outcome of this fight...

I agree with Warren. A win over Pavlik > a win over Jones.

Joe should have fought Pavlik.. he would have beat him like Lacy and he would have really cemented his legacy in the sport by beating the young undefeated champion. Instead Hopkins "Used" Pavlik for that reason.

You raise a good point there, it would have been preferable he left Warren then. But then I doubt it was that easy to pull out of a contract then with Warren. He's had trouble getting out of his last fight under Warren which was just verbal, so clearly had he have left earlier it'd be way more tricky.

Joe has a point, Manfredo was a star hence his reason for fighting him, publicity in the US, he didn't really think he was a great fighter he was hyping the fight, and if you asked him now would admit that.

I'm not sure a win over Pavlik does do more, Pavlik's already out of the p4p list and way less talked about and highly regarded as he was before, for that schooling. People would just say he was a lighter, over rated guy like Lacy. It's a no win situation so he's always going to have critics.
