Baer wasn't any sort of a ***, nor was his father either non-practicing or whatever. To be a ***, you either have to be a convert, preferrably Orthodox, that's religious, or have your mother a ***. Otherwise you're NOT. You might notice that NONE of the Baers at least for several generations married anyone remotely ***ish, even though the boxing crowds were littered with ***s. I once wanted to marry ***ish girl, from a NOT religious family, and , although we were very suited in every way, the family wouldn't HEAR of it...why??? Because I wasn't ***ish, even though i knew more about ***s than they did. She later did marry a ***......

Baer wore the David Star as a gimmick, also because "Baer" was a sort of name that some ***s had. Well I knew Protestants named Goldberg. Also because most of the managers and promoters in his day were ***s, as well as many non=***ish fighters who adopted ***ish names and stars. I read a couple of stories about them in the 1940's especially after the Holocaust, so that's what it was. Mike Jacobs was the BIG Madison Sq Gardens Guru etc. and there were others. Did you guys know that Max Schmeling's manager was a ***, also named, I think Jacobs (correct me if I'm wrong someone)I may be a little hazy here and there but my tenet is 100%.

About Ted Kid Lewis, there are a few things that the qwriter forgot to include.

For instance, when he fought Georges Carpentier,. the World Light heavy Champ, Georges was 175, Gershon, or Ted, was 157. Also, when he fought for the British Lt.Heavy title it was also for the European HEAVYWEIGHT Championship. he weighed only about 155 or so. They had 20 round fights then. He weighed around 160 only for his last fight or two, obviously fighting for the money, and not in training.

In his last couple of fights, when he was about 36=7, he was only a lightweight, about 137=8 lbs. He was a real hero to the ***s, they used to talk about him all the time, not Benny Leonard, who was in the previous generation, and also an American, too far away from Europe, but Ted Kid was just "next door". they also used to talk about Jack Kid Berg, and a few others I've whose names have slipped my memory.

Yes I have that after-fight interview, where he thanks his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I think Zab's family is a member of an offshoot group who call themselves Black Hebrews or something, and think because they wear prayer shawls and little skullcaps that this qualifies them . They also scatter ***ish insignia around on therir clothes and "religious" artifacts, (Zab sometimes had a David Shield on his trunks), like the 7 branch candlestick, and the ram's horn trumpet, (I think). They mostly adhere to Christian dogma I think.

A sort of mixed up bunch........And there's lots more groups of a similiar kind scattered all through America.

I read the other week of a long established African tribe of thousands called )I think) the Lemba, who claim to be ***s and follow ***ish practices. Also that there are other African tribes with similiar ideas.

Also a tribe in Nth-East India in the provinces of Mizoram and Manipur, and spilling over into Mynmar, called the Mizo's, numbering about 7 mill, who have an offshoot group of villages, about 10-12,000 people, who's leader had a vision about 50 years ago, and since then have worked to becoming ***ish. They succeeded to the extent that the rabbis in Israel sent out someone to convert them, and they have been emigrating to Israel for the past 5 years or so, a few hundred at a time.

      Maybe it's the coming thing.....

***s have always been great warriors

All humans have the desire to live in their own state with their own people. This goes for ***s as well. This desire influenced the ***s' actions thousands of years ago and it undoubtedly motivates them now to do certain things. In fact, if you're a person living in a country you don't consider your own, and for one reason or another there's nothing you can do about it, you probably feel kind of enslaved. The Hebrew Bible is filled with stories about ***s going to war with groups of people and different civilizations in a struggle for the security of the Promised Land. One such story involves the Israelites marching around the city walls of Jericho blowing their ram's horns, the sound of which has been used as a kind of trumpet call to spiritual awareness for ***ish religious purposes. The walls of the city then collapsed and the Israelites were able to charge straight into the city and destroy it. The success of the operation depended on the work of the Israeli spies who were living in Jericho. This was all done for the security of Israel. There's certainly nothing wrong with defending your land. Since the stories in the Hebrew Bible were written thousands of years ago as a guide to help the ***s survive, I wonder how stories from the book influence people today.

In Exodus there's a story in which ***s are enslaved by the Egyptians. God then commissions Moses to go to Egypt and deliver his fellow Hebrews from bondage. God had Moses practice transforming his rod into a serpent and inflicting and healing leprosy, and told him that he could also pour river water on dry land to change the water to blood. These correspond to some of the ten plagues which would later be inflicted on the Egyptians. The Pharaoh allows the Hebrews to depart after Moses and his God sent ten plagues upon the Egyptians(they sort of took turns cursing the Egyptians). The ***s then head toward the Promised Land. These events are commemorated as Passover, referring to how the plague "passed over" the houses of the Israelites while smiting the Egyptians. Every passover ***s study this story again. They are inspired by a story that implies that if they are being kept from the Promised Land, then their enemies should be inflicted with disease and illness, and people like Moses can take an active role in making it happen. How does this story influence ***s today?

Here's another story from the book. Lot is a *** living in the city of Sodom and angels were sent to save him from all the sinning going on around that place. The angels are the bearers of good advice that will help Lot's family survive. The men of Sodom demand that Lot send out his guests (the angels) so they can know them. Instead Lot introduces the villagers to his daughter, risking having her sexually assaulted. Before Lot's family is assaulted the angels lead them out of the city which is subsequently destroyed by God. Since Lot refused to introduce the villagers to the bearers of good advice, wouldn't that contribute to the destruction of the city? That's kinda weird. So how does this story influence ***s today? The way Lot is led out of the city is similar to what happens in the story about Noah's Ark.

Philistine was a threat to Israel. Samson was an Israelite but he travels to Philistine where he falls in love with a Philistine woman. This happens after he had already been married to another woman in Philistine. The marriage was actually part of God's plan to strike at the Philistines. This is explicitly stated in the Hebrew Bible. Basically Samson's woman and the Philistines conspire to cut his hair.(The Hebrews were prohibited by biblical law from cutting their hair or beards, so the cutting of Samson's hair would symbolize Samson becoming less interested in ***ish causes). So they cut his hair. He was assimilated. In the story, Samson is described as being a slave to the Philistines. One day the Philistine leaders assemble in a temple for a religious sacrifice to their god (they're not ***s). Samson, his hair having grown long again (he cares about ***ish causes again), is leaning against the temple's central pillars. He busts the central pillars and down come the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Are ***s influenced by this story today?

Sorry I should have written that Benny Leonard was in the same generation, and, when he made his comeback after losing all his money in the 1929 Stock market crash, even a half generation later.

All the same the guys I knew hardly ever mentioned Leonard, but always Kid Lewis, and Kid Berg.

the ***ish community, especially in the US, has produced some very good fighters and even a few great ones. This is actually a terrific article and one that opens up a whole new topic for discussion, that of social and economic class and the success of an ethnic community within boxing.

***s and Irish communities flocked to the US during the early 20th century and were exceptionally poor, finding what ever menial jobs they could, which led them to boxing, where they realised they could earn more money in a successful career with closed fists than they could with open palms on the rail ways or construction sites.

The same can be said of successful boxing ethnic groups post-1930, as the ***s and then the Irish "moved up in the world" with better education and better jobs, they no longer took part in the sport, which is when we the domination of the African-American in boxing, suffering from many of the same cruel socio-economic problems of the communities that cam before.

In recent years, we have seen far more boxers of eastern European descent and immigration ply their trade in the US and do extremely well. Boxing is a sport which is often decided upon and practiced by those who are in the worst possible position in life. It's the magic of it all.

Being of ***ish decent on both sides they used to identify being ***ish only thru the Mother but in recent years the DNA researchers are taking a different view on this subject...by the way great list and info on this one ethnic group.... my grandfater Dave Levey is in Nat Fleishers Ring Record book I think up till 57 as a promoter manager and my father Stan Levey fought some pretty good fighters in his time as a heavweight although he was a great Bebop Drummer with Diz and Bird on 2nd Street and when he got his jaw broke he figured he'd stick with drumming as the skins didn't hit back so hard.. lol

I posted a help message which I think was to lengthy and maybe this is where I need to start.. We are doing a book on him and his very interesting life so if there are any researchers that might be availble to find a bit more on their tie to boxing I would appreciate it...Henry Hascup, John DiSanto and Mike DeLisa have been very helpful in my research but I need a little more if it's out there... The music part of his life is a slam dunk but the other is a bit difficult... Thanks Bob Levey
