    Why didn't Hopkins fight Calzaghe like he did Pavlik?

    Hopkins was agressive, he engaged Pavlik and mixed up his punches to the head and to the body.
    He counterpunched effectively as well.

    Against Joe he was purley defensive and allowed himself to be outworked in close rounds.
    I dont get it....

    Me neither, of course there is a Calzaghe factor, but I hope for Joe's sake we don't see a rematch.

      I think he just came in with the wrong gameplan with Freddy Roach who most likely kept emphasising to him that you're old and what not. Freddy Roach could not have been good for Hopkins' confidence.

        he fought very defensive against joe so the fight could atleast be close and he could still cry abut the decision after because he knows if he would of been more ofeensive against joe that joe would of put the beats on him

          When Hopkins threw combinations and flurried he had success, though.

            How about this, their different fighters?

            Hopkins was not able to do to Calzaghe what he did to Pavlik, because Pavlik has less of all these things;

            Foot work, tactics, feinting, angles, work rate, punch output, relentlessness.

            Plus the fact Calzaghe prefers an aggressive guy coming to him so it would have helped him, and Hops was doing his best to ruin his boxing, nullify, counter and just nick rounds.

            Pavliks a totally different kettle of fish hence it was a different fight. Styles make fights.

              Its a combination of a few things. One...That Bernard Hopkins is the best bernard Hopkins we may of ever seen. He fought the fight of his life. The other thing is unlike Pavlik, Joe comes forward at different angles, and can hit you at different angles. His footwork is light years ahead of Pavliks. Plus he's awkward as hell. You really cant train for a guy like Calzaghe, because know one fights like him. He may be better then Hopkins at disrupting his opponents rhythm.

                It is not what he did or did not do, Hopkins never even tried to establish an agressive gameplan against Joe.
                It may have been a confidence thing. We all know Joe was not about to stop Hopkins, it is strange that Bernard never took control of the fight, or even tried to.

                  One reason might be Calzaghe is a completely different style of fighter. Nard went really deep at the presser last night explaining what Pavlik does in the ring and how he beat it. Calzaghe presents a different, much less preictable, variance of offense than Pavlik so he couldn't time Cal like he could Pavlik. When Kelly missed, he had to reset; Cal doesn't mind missing a few to land on the back end.

                    Because they have two totally different styles. Until people really study boxing they will be mystified by things like this, but its not hard to see.
