Age first started boxing: Eight.
First boxing memory: My first fight. I beat up on a little fellow and he was crying, but I was glad I won.
Inspiration: To take it one round at a time and make it back to the corner for further instructions from (trainer/father figure) Mr (George) Peterson. That’s all.
Favourite all-time fighter: Well, Sir, without being arrogant, I’d say myself.
Best fight you’ve seen: Sugar Ray Leonard-Marvin Hagler. Ray proved he could come back from a long layoff and beat Hagler, who had
been beating everyone.
What do you do to relax: I either go fishing or shooting with my guns.
Pre-fight superstition: I used to have as an
amateur, like wearing another winning fighter’s gear. But not now, no.
What training, if any, do you do between fights:
I’m always in the gym. But if I don’t have a fight coming up I’ll train with less intensity. Like now, I’ll do an hour or so just to break sweat.
Typical breakfast: I eat what I want. I have no problems with weight. I have fruit juice mostly.
Toughest part of being a boxer: The training.
The fight itself is easy. It’s the months of training before it that’s hard.
Favourite music: Mostly Rap. Also R&B. I also like my country music.
Last book you read: (Laughs) I really can’t remember
– it would have to be something from back in high school.
I don’t even read boxing magazines either.
I don’t like to think about boxing unless I’m
fighting or training.
Favourite film: The Godfather and King of New York.
What car do you drive: 1973 Capri convertible and a Chevy Tahoe.
Where do you train: Either in Washington DC
– at The Round One gym. Otherwise in Puerto Rico.
Training routine: I spar around 50-60 rounds for
a fight, and do a lot of roadwork. I feel roadwork is very important. I run a good five miles a day. I don’t lift weights. I’m in the gym every day.
Toughest man faced: Walter Matthysse. He was undefeated when I fought him and had power.
What supplements do you take: Mega Man’s Sports vitamins.
Last place you went on holiday: Atlanta, to see my brother. Although Puerto Rico, where I was training, seemed like a vacation to me.
Best boxer in the sport today: Oh, I let the fans decide that. But I’m pretty comfortable with myself!
Favourite football team: The Dallas Cowboys, but they’ve been letting me down a bit lately.
