The ribs bothered me a lot more than the jaw, honestly. As for speaking....after a couple of days, I got pretty good at talking without needing to move my jaw. As they say, practice makes perfect. Going without solid food for 10 weeks (bad break, 3 places, plus a re-injury about 10 days after the initial breaks) was tough, I'll admit, but the ribs were a constant aggravation. At least my jaw didn't bother me unless I bothered it. The ribs were tender for nearly a month, with every breath. Back to the jaw....right after I got the wires off, I gorged myself on bacon, eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy and OJ....it bounced back up and I had to have breakfast all over again. The only other thing that bothered me about the jaw was that I could barely open my mouth for awhile. Really, really stiff, but not necessarily painful. Ankles are worse, in my opinion, than a jaw, simply because it limits mobility so much.

Broken ribs are nothing compared to a broken jaw. Sure it hurts when you breath and cough or get up from bed (happened to me twice)....but a broken jaw? It hurts with you move your neck, smile, sneeze, yawn, look up, look down or turn your head, you can't chew or eat solid foods, it's hard to speak.....
