    WW rankings before Margarito/Lujan

    Looked STRANGE to me.

    C - Zab Judah
    1 - Antonio Margarito
    2 - Cory Spinks
3 - Thomas Daamgard (wtf? No wonder Gatti got a shot at Baldomir after beating him)
4 - Manuel Gomez (people should give Margarito more credit for this win)
    5 - Kermit Cintron
6 - Jawaid Khaliq (can anyone tell me anything about this guy? He got ranked, and then just suddenly retired after a decent winning streak... weird)
    7 - Carlos Baldomir
8 - Cosme Rivera (I can't believe this guy was ever ranked)
    9 - David Estrada
    10 - Sebastian Lujan

yea...even RING magazine rankings should be taken with a grain of salt sometimes.

The Welterweight division had seen better days. Im not sure how guys like Damgaard and Lujan got on there at all, especially considering they had no real good wins on their records and probebly hadnt even been seen by most people...

but I guess its like that Giovanni Lorenzo guy...he had no good wins either, and no one had really seen him. yet RING magazine had him ranked too, #7 or something.
And then good ol Marquez beat em up, and now he gets that title shot against Abraham.

Kind of like a modern day Jackson Bonsei.

What can you tell me about the dude I asked about in the first post? #6 or #7? I seriously had never heard his name before they showed that graphic on ESPNClassic.

I might be mistaken but I remember hearing that at the time Margarito was to fight Gomez he was the highest ranked fighter on the WBO that was available to fight. Then it was on the ill fated Klitschko Rahman card and when that got scrapped, the WBO gave Tony the option to not fight Gomez but he did anyway so Gonmez could get his shot

That's pretty tight if that's true.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone can tell me who Jawaid Khaliq is.

                  I'm actually really curious, still.

Jawaid was a welter from my hometown Nottingham. He was very exciting but only boxed part-time as he worked as a cab driver. I saw him fight once in Nottingham for the IBO title, but when he got rated with the WBC, he went after Cory Spinks' title, which fell out of IBO's favours. His management had him in place for a title eliminator, but his personal life took a downward spiral.

A lot of rumours surfaced around his 'retirement', but speaking with lads at the gym he trained at it seems he fell into the drugs game in Nottingham (Dealing etc...) Such a wasted talent. Other rumours suggest he never took boxing seriously, and left to work for his family.
