Ezzard Charles faced (and beat) Archie Moore, the all-time knockout leader, three times.

      He also faced:

      Rocky Marciano (twice)
      Charley Burley (twice)
      Lloyd Marshall (three times)
      Jose Basora
      Violent Ray (twice)
      Joe Louis
      Nino Valdes
      Bob Satterfield

Rex Layne and Jersey Joe Walcott weren't exactly soft punchers either, and Charles faced Layne 3 times and Walcott 4 times.

      Jake LaMotta faced:

      Ray Robinson (six times)
      Jose Basora (four times)
      Lloyd Marshall
      Marcel Cerdan
      Bob Murphy (twice)
Billy Fox (unknown how many of his KOs were on the level though)
      Bob Satterfield

Among more recent heavyweights, the number of big (or good) punchers than Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis faced were impressive.

Wow, both of those guys have a lot of murderous punchers on their resumes...

I'm more impressed by the fact that some guy is named Violent Ray.

It's really Elmer "Violent" Ray, but I like the nickname so much that when I post about him, I leave out the Elmer.

I read some great articles on Elmer "Violent" Ray today, how he would wrestle with alligators, knock people out with one hand tied behind his back, compete in battle royals of 10 men and other things...

Joe Louis and a lot of other people supposedly avoided him.

Not sure how much is true but it's a good read.

I would add DeJohn, Nardico and maybe Tommy Bell for LaMotta, maybe they weren't great punchers but not exactly feather-fisted either (DeJohn had over 50 KO's, Nardico dropped LaMotta and Maxim, Bell dropped Robinson).

              Maybe it's a stretch.
