I love boxing, I've competed in boxing a long time, and I like it much more than MMA. We have the best sport on the planet, and we need to stop feeling so threatened by MMA. Boxing is going to be fine, the sport is in good shape. We've got a truckload of superfights coming up, starting with the next 2 weekends, and continuing on to De La Hoya - Pacquiao. This is another big year, and boxing is gradually resurging, despite what outlets like Sports Illustrated will try to tell people.
A lot of the threads here just show that the boxing fans here are feeling threatened, so are looking for the first opportunity to trash MMA. There is no need, our sport is fine.
If anything, the Petruzelli-Kimbo fight says very positive things about MMA athletes. It shows that the athleticism is good enough so that you have to be a lot more than a big strong guy with one or two years of training under his belt to go to the top of the sport. Imagine if Slice blew through Petruzelli and ended up beating Fedor Emelianenko within the next year? THAT, would be an insult to MMA. Slice being exposed says good things about the sport.
It is true that it was completely shameful the way they hyped up Kimbo, but we can't just take one instance of bull**** promotion and try to characterize an entire sport by it. If MMA fans took the worst of the worst from boxing and tried to use it to trash the entire sport, they'd have plenty of amunition (Tye Fields, prime example).
