Joe Calzaghe would have schooled any version of Roy Jones Jr, Joe was just too slick and he didn't have a glass jaw.

Joe was past his prime too and he had a tonne of hand problems back in his heyday when he was beating up Chris Eubank that version of him could and would give massive problems to Roy Jones Jr too bad we missed out on some good match-ups but I won't blame Joe for it since Roy never traveled either so why should I place blame only on one person?

Joe struggled with Robin Reid and he was dropped by Byron Mitchell and Kabary Salem.

As good as he was, he was always relatively easy to hit, especially with right hands.


Roy was faster.

He was more accurate.

He had better reflexes.

He had better timing.

He had a bigger repertoire of punches.

He had genuine one punch knockout power in either hand.

When they fought in 2008, yes, they were both at advanced ages. But even though Joe was 36, he was still an elite fighter, coming off of 2 of his biggest wins. Whereas Roy was 3-3 in his previous 6, and he hadn't had a top level win for exactly 5 years. He was 9 weeks from his 40th birthday, and Joe had wrote in his autobiography that Roy was shot in 2004, which is the only reason Tarver and Johnson were able to beat him. He also wrote that a fight between them would be pointless. His autobiography was released at some point in 2007, the year before they fought. So what does that say about Joe?


Joe would never have fought him when he was anywhere near his prime.

It's a shame, but many fights weren't viable for one reason or another.

There weren't too many fighters who truly wanted to fight Roy when he was prime.

Roy never had to travel in his prime.

It was Joe who needed to travel to the U.S. earlier in his career to try and obtain the biggest fights for himself. He didn't get recognition until he'd beaten Lacy in 2006. And that's because he was content to defend a lightly regarded WBO belt 21 times, against mainly B and C class opposition.

He didn't duck him.

His handlers couldn't agree terms with Don King, because King reportedly wanted future options on Roy.

I loved Nigel as a kid.

He would have been extremely dangerous for Roy, but he wasn't the same force at SMW that he'd been at MW. I'd have given him a 5 round window to have gotten Roy out of there. But I don't think he could have done it. Nigel was easy enough to hit and he was vulnerable.

I think Roy would have scored a TKO in the mid to late rounds. I think his aggression would have been used against him.

He couldn't beat Watson and Eubank at his best weight at his peak, yet he'd have beaten Roy at his peak at SMW?
