"Too much 'Sugar' can ruin a man." - Shane Mosley

    Article from: east side boxing
"Wright - Mosley II Media Ballot

LAS VEGAS, NV (Election Day 2004) -- Incumbent WINKY WRIGHT, the first undisputed super welterweight champion in 29 years, and his challenger, SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY, a world champion in three different weight divisions, thrown out of office by Wright last March, return to the ring for their word title rematch, Saturday, November 20 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, the fight will be televised live by HBO, beginning at
    9:45 P.M. ET / 6:45 P.M. PT.

"The only difference between the rematch and the original fight will be the duration, not the result," stated southpaw Wright, a favorite of the left. "I am going to punch his ballot hard November 20!"

"Winky had better review the history books on rematches," responded Mosley, from his new campaign headquarters at Joe Goossen's gym. "Carmen Basilio and Gene Fullmer found out in their rematches against Sugar Ray Robinson and so did Roberto Duran in his rematch against Sugar Ray Leonard. Too much 'Sugar' can ruin a man."

Does Winky have Shane's number? Can new trainer Joe Goossen return Sugar Shane to glory as he did with Diego Corrales? One thing is for sure -- the winner will be looking mega fights with the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad in 2005.

I think Shane and Joe Goosen have some tricks in store for Winky come November 20th.

Joe Goosen did help fix Diego Corrales career sucessfully, maybe Shane will move around the ring and flurry. Similar to what Ray Leonard did to Hagler.

There is a difference between the Sugar Ray's and Sugar Shane. They are all time greats and Shane is not. I think Mosley is forgetting about his rematch with Forrest and though arguable his rematch with Delahoya. He didn't fair too good in those. Joe Goosen will possibly add to Shane's options but I think in the end the weight is just too much for Shane to move much and throw combinations. Goosen helped fix Corrales some in his rematch with Casamayor which I thought Corrales lost by the way but Corrales looked his usual self against Freitas until Acelino tired and got caught.

Winky has not sound ****y to me since beating Mosley the first time so I feel he wouldn't be ****y. He is always in shape so I think he will be ready to go on the 20th. Mosley's best chance is to move more and not stand in front of Winky all night.

On November 20th, "Sugar" Shane Mosley will be set to avenge his loss in a rematch with Ronald "Winky" Wright. Earlier this year, on March 3rd, IBF champion Winky Wright, became the first undisputed super welterweight world champion in 29 years and the first ever to hold all three major world titles by winning a unanimous decision over WBA and WBC champion at the time, Shane Mosley. Now, eight months later, Mosley (19-3 35 KO’s) plans on redemption and getting his belts back with hopes to a new start for his career in the rematch. "Shane has got a huge heart," stated promoter Gary Shaw. "He didn’t have to take the immediate rematch with Winky Wright, but he knows he can win on Saturday November 20th at Mandalay Bay."

Mosley with new and renowned trainer, Joe Goossen, and promoter Gary Shaw, held an open workout Wednesday from his camp at the Ten Goose Gym in Van Nuys, Ca. Aside from seeing Mosley looking in tip top shape with his shirt off, some light work on the speedbag, heavybag and some shadow boxing was the only taste any of the press got. Mosley had already done his heavy work and sparring just earlier and Goossen didn’t want to spoil what he promises as a surprise and big things from Mosley from November 20th and on:

"We’ve been training since the first week in September," stated Joe, "so it’s gonna be about 3 months worth of time in camp. I think we’ve worked out a lot of details here that are going to be beneficial to Shane come November 20th. You know, fighting southpaws is always difficult and you really have to prepare specifically for that. We studied a lot of things on our opponent and we’ve really been conscientious about how we’ve been training. I can’t see us coming away with anything but a victory on November 20th. I'm very confident. I don’t like to make predictions or boast, but it’s very rare to get to work with a talent like Shane Mosley. I expect great things from Shane. He’s got a lot left in him for anybody who ever doubted him. He just needed to get his career back on track, his training back on track. I cant see anything but positive things coming out of him."

Gary Shaw made things clear before anyone started asking questions about Shane’s father and previous trainer, Jack Mosley. "As far as Jack Mosley goes, the relationship remains father and son, the love of a father and son. It was something that Shane felt that he needed to change in his career. He wasn’t coached by anybody to do it. It’s something that he did. He’s a world class fighter and anybody that deals with world class athletes, nobody knows that like they know themselves. Of course, Joe Goossen was the person that Shane chose to take him to the next level. Father, son, family, all intact. Love. Jack’s still there for him."

"I’ve been working very hard for this fight.", addressed Mosley to the press. "This is a huge fight, a great match. Hopefully everybody comes down to check it out."

Later, ********* sat with Mosley who was all smiles and straight to the point.

Is going into the rematch with Wright, easier, harder or similar to going into your rematch with Forrest, having lost the first fight in both?
"I think it’s similar. The only difference is that with this I have a legitimate plan going in and attacking and I know exactly what I want to do in the match."

What’s the biggest difference going to be in this fight besides not having Jack in the corner?
"The biggest difference is gonna be that people actually see me. See what Sugar Shane will prove. My defense is gonna be tight. My punches are gonna be crisp and Im gonna be very fast. You’re just gonna see a complete Sugar Shane Mosley. It’s not gonna be, maybe lacking in the energy, or throwing punches, I'm just gonna be electric through the whole fight."

How good of a fighter is Wright to you?
"I think he’s a good fighter. He’s very basic and he’s good at what he does. If you’re not on top of your game, you’re gone."

Joe Goossen chimes in, "Winky Wright, I would say he’s one of the most difficult southpaws out there right now. That’s for sure. He’s champion of the world, that ranks him up there right now as one of the top guys in the business. He’s given guys a good handle, [Fernando] Vargas, he dealt Shane a loss in his last fight, so a very capable guy. He’s very sturdy, very fundamentally sound and if you don’t bring the right tools to the table, fundamentally you’re dead."

Joe, Mosley’s first big fight, the first match-up with Oscar DeLaHoya, was Mosley’s day to prove to the critics, fans and everyone who he was and what he has. Does this rematch with Wright put Mosley in a similar situation?
"This could be considered quite an accomplishment considering the peoples feelings out there and the odds. There’s a lot of doubters out there. That’s kind of inspiring in a way. I think we’re looking at it from that aspect. Shane wants to redeem and avenge himself. He wants to let the general public and anyone else concerned, to let them know that he’s far from over and he’s got many good years ahead of him. I feel the same way because athletically, physically, he’s a young kid. If you look at him he looks like he’s still in his 20's, he doesn’t look like he’s 34. It has a lot to do with mental aspects, how you approach the game, how you feel about yourself. There’s so many variables and intangibles that when they fall into place and the stars are aligned you’re gonna have a real good night. They’re all starting to line up that way as far as Im concerned. It’s exactly how I envisioned it to be, so I'm very confident."

            * * *

The rematch, entitled "In a rematch, sometimes only the names remain the same" has Mosley planning on adding his name to the list of fighters who may have lost their first outing, but secured victory in a rematch:

Sandy Saddler vs Willie Pep II
Bob Montgomery vs Beau Jack II
Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns II
Gene Fullmer vs Sugar Ray Robinson II
Toney Zale vs Rocky Graziano II
Roberto Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard II
Carmen Basilio vs Sugar Ray Robinson II
Apollo Creed vs Rocky Balboa II

The "Sugar" Shane Mosley vs Ronald "Winky" Wright rematch will be shown Live, beginning at 9:45pm ET / 6:45 pm PT on HBO from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada."

I like Winky Wright in rematch. Sugar Shane needs to put some pop on his punches, cuz otherwise Wright will outbox him.

i still don't think Mosley can technically beat Wright. and i sure won't believe that Wright will be too ****y coming up to this fight in 2-3 weeks.
