De La Hoya names Beristain trainer
By Kevin Iole
Oscar De La Hoya made pretty much the only choice he had available on Tuesday when he announced the hiring of Nacho Beristain as his trainer for his Dec. 6 fight against Manny Pacquiao.
De La Hoya told Yahoo! Sports on Sept. 10 that he was going to part ways with longtime trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. Mayweather took a job training Ricky Hatton, who is fighting Paulie Malignaggi on Nov. 22.
De La Hoya has long demanded exclusivity from his trainer during camp and obviously would have had to split Mayweather's time with Hatton. Beristain, who also trains Ring Magazine lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, will be able to give his full attention to the Golden Boy.
Beristain is a sound technical trainer and brilliant strategist who is regarded among the finest boxing minds produced by Mexico. De La Hoya, who is a Mexican American and grew up in East Los Angeles idolizing many Mexican fighters, has long admired Beristain.
"Nacho Beristain is a great trainer who I have respected for many years and I'm honored to have him in my corner," De La Hoya said in a statement. "In addition to his great tactical mind and considering that he prepared Juan Manuel Marquez for two fights against Manny Pacquiao, he knows him very well. I'm confident that with Nacho’s game plan and my execution, we'll be victorious on Dec. 6."
Beristain stresses a strong jab, angles and movement. De La Hoya has a tendency to forget his jab, a weakness that cost him a shot at an upset of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007.
But because De La Hoya is going to be much bigger and, presumably, stronger than Pacquiao, the jab will again be the key as a range finder.
Beristain insisted he's already got an idea of how the fight will be waged.
"Oscar De La Hoya is one of the premier fighters of this era and I am excited about working with him for this very important fight," Beristain said in a statement released by Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya's company. "I already have a plan in mind for beating Pacquiao and I know Oscar will do whatever it takes to carry that plan through on fight night."
